De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a public university in the city of Leicester, England. It was established in accordance with the Further and Higher Education Act in 1992 as a degree-awarding body. The name De Montfort University was taken from Simon de Montfort, a 13th-century Earl of Leicester credited with establishing the first Parliament of England in 1265.

The university is organized into four faculties: Art, Design, and Humanities (ADH); Business and Law (BAL); Health and Life Sciences (H&LS); and Computing, Engineering, and Media (CEM). It is a Sustainable Development Hub, focusing on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, an initiative by the United Nations launched in 2018. The Department of Education awarded the university a Gold rating in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Art and Design Foundation Diploma

Workshop inductions provide a full introduction to woodwork, metalwork, jewellery, plaster, ceramics, laser cutting and 3D printing, fabric manipulation, wet photography (darkroom techniques), printmaking, textiles print, digital art, video and animation. 

Take part in organised study visits to cities such as London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Oxford and Cambridge. Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be eligible for direct entry onto all of our art and design degrees (subject to entry requirements). These range from Art and Architecture to Design Crafts to Fashion and Textiles.

Engineering Year Zero

This course can be a stepping stone towards one of our undergraduate Engineering degrees upon successful completion, and is a great place to start if you are returning to study. It is suitable for people from a wide range of backgrounds, including mature students and people looking for a change of career.

Foundation Year in Computing

The course introduces a wide range of IT, communication and study skills that will prepare you for a degree in computing, enabling you to progress onto more advanced study.

The course covers the basics of cutting-edge IT topics, such as computer animation, as well as more familiar office applications, such as spreadsheets and databases. Staff and students work together in a friendly and supportive workshop environment.

Graphic Design and e-Media Foundation Degree (FdA)

By studying this course, you'll be taught both traditional graphic design techniques as well as those utilising new and emerging technologies. You will complete briefs in order to build a portfolio that showcases your ability and potential to gain employment in a variety of diverse and creative fields. Alternatively, you can progress to top up to a full BA (Hons) at DMU. The course is made up of common elements which combine studio practice, contextual studies and subject-specific pathways in graphic design for print or e-media design.

Music Performance Foundation Degree FdA

Develop expertise in music performance, composition, song-writing and production through a range of industry-standard projects and academic work.

You’ll have opportunities to develop your musical skills in your chosen instrument (or vocal) – whether it be pop, rock, jazz or classical. You’ll also be taught how to apply your performance and production skills in commercial environments, such as session musicianship, studio recording, music production and composition for film and TV.

The programme offers access to well-equipped rehearsal spaces, performance areas and recording studios. Leicester College boasts an Apple Pro training centre and an Ableton-certified training centre, which means students have the option to gain professional certification alongside this course

Pharmacy MPharm Year Zero

The initial year of this course is taught by DMUIC, which occupies a single, specially-designed site in the heart of the DMU campus. As a DMUIC student, you will have full access to all the university’s facilities including the library, gym, bookshop, cafes and computer labs. During this year, you will be taught in small class sizes by experienced tutors, receiving excellent academic teaching and superb support to ensure that you get all the help you need to succeed and progress to the Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) degree.
