  • For over 50 years, students have chosen ELS to achieve their English language goals. With 12 class levels, state-of-the-art language technology centers, multiple testing services and university admission assistance, ELS ensures success through our personalized approach and commitment to student achievement. ELS' rapidly globalizing world presents many challenges; however, those challenges bring with them many opportunities. Being able to communicate effectively in English can help students make the most of these opportunities and enable student to accomplish his dreams. ELS International Pathways provide one with a seamless journey to further education. Students can study English with ELS in 83 different locations in 11 countries. By completing the ELS English for Academic Purposes program, student satisfy the English requirement for more than 650 ELS partner universities worldwide. ELS University Admission Services will guide students from start to finish as he progress toward his chosen university. Students will make new friends from around the world and come to understand their cultures. This will ensure one a successful journey through a rapidly changing, globalizing world.

About the  Northern Illinois University

  • Northern Illinois University is a public research university located in DeKalb, Illinois, with satellite centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford and Oregon. It was originally founded as Northern Illinois State Normal School pon May 22nd, 1895 by Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld as part of an expansion of the state's system for producing college educated teachers. The university is composed of seven degree-granting colelges and has a student body of 25,000 with over 225,000 alumni. Many of NIU's programs are nationally accredited for meeting high standards of academic quality, including business, engineering, nursing, visual and performing arts, and all teacher certification programs. It is one of only two public universities in Illinois that compete in the National collegiate Athletic Association at the highest levels of all sports.

Conditional admission

  • With over level 112 in ELS, students can be accepted to Bachelor, Master and Doctorate's programs. Both Undergraduate and Graduate schools issue a CLA to students.

    • The Blackhawk cafeteria in the Holmes Student Center is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am-1:30pm.In the International House, students, international scholars and artists interact in a convivial atmosphere to share ideas about living on an increasingly vital world stage. Here you will meet students from over 32countries speaking more than 15 different languages. Special activities include dinners from varying cultures; opportunities for foreign language students to focus on language skills in French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese; and discussions and activities related to political science and public service. Douglas Hall is located on the West Campus near the Student Recreation Center. It is also very close to Huskie Stadium as well as some of NIU's other athletic fields. The residential floors are located in four five-story wings. Most rooms are double occupancy, with twin bunk beds. Douglas also features the popular dining facility, the Dog Pound Deli. Rooms include a bed, closet, desk, chair, microwave, mini-refrigerator, telephone and internet access. Self-service laundry machines are available for a small fee. Students living in the International House are involved with the Foreign Language Residence Program, domestic students who want to live with international students, have studied abroad, are interested in international issues or international students who have an interest in global issues.

  • ELS/DeKalb is located in a small and friendly university community. Our Center is on the main campus of Northern Illinois University, with its 300 hectares of trees and grassy areas. An affordable cost of living and many outdoor activities make this the perfect location for students with families. Northern Illinois University offers 63 undergraduate majors, 79 graduate programs and 11 Ph.D. programs.

課程主要是跟口語有關,畢竟我們在學校所學的英文能力能藉此發揮,才能習慣成自然,我是這樣想的。課堂第一天,老師與班上學生討論有興趣的議題與所期待能在這門課中獲得什麼,選擇自己所感興趣的,然後盡情參與其中。

有趣的是,一個班級就如同文化的大熔爐,觀點與文化的不同常會互相腦力激盪而後產生獨特的見解,比如說,某次上課主題為社群網站,討論過程中,可以了解到不同國情文化使用社群網絡的現象與特色。
不同於我們對於上課的刻板肅穆氛圍,課堂中取而代之的是如同歡樂的宴會氣氛,每位同學皆踴躍的表達自己的看法,同時也尊重他人的不同見地,若討論到敏感議題時例如政治,如何有風度地接受別人的看法,並且機智給予回應,是我在這個月當中所學到的寶貴經驗,不僅止於課堂討論,同學之間相處也是不吝給予指點,並當下指出你的錯誤迅速解決問題,避免問題隨著時間擴大與複雜化,這也是令我印象最深刻的。如何有技巧的不讓對方感到不舒服與保持組內的和諧,在這短短的一個月當中,我確實學到不少。
