  • The ESL Program at Murray State University emphasizes language proficiency in all skill and knowledge areas (speaking, listening, writing, reading, and grammar) and provides students with an overview of American culture.Information on the ESL curriculum can be found at your left side column. Our typical student has completed secondary school at home and is preparing to enter college.The average ESL class size is around 15 students, making it possible for students to receive personal attention from the instructors - an environment well-suited for student success.

Course Information

  • The Murray State ESL Program is an academically oriented intensive English program in the Institute for International Studies, offering ESL courses of 20+ hours a week to college bound or English only students in nine different skill and knowledge areas, including applied grammar, computer assisted composition, academic reading, listening comprehension, conversation, speech development, oral skills workshop, error analysis, and TOEFL preparation, at six different proficiency levels, preparing them for degree studies at Murray State or any other higher learning institutions in North America or elsewhere.  

    After you arrive on the Murray State campus and before you take any ESL classes, you will take a placement test, which consists of three parts, an oral interview with one of the ESL instructors, an essay writing exam, and an Institutional TOEFL that the Murray State ESL program is authorized to administer regularly, and you will be placed accordingly in a level where you can progress the most. The ESL Program also offers the ESL students a university transition class, orienting new students like you to campus life and providing you with information that you may need for a successful experience at Murray State. 

    ESL classes start and end at the same time as do university classes for both fall and spring semesters, but we divide both semesters in the middle to make two ESL terms, so plus the summer ESL term, we have five 8-week ESL terms in a calendar year. You’ll have classes every day from Monday through Friday from 9:00 in the morning to 2:50 or 3:50 in the afternoon. New students will also have a transition class on Wednesdays or one afternoon after your last class. The ESL program may also use Wednesdays for activities or field trips for special group students. 

    In addition to the regular ESL curriculum, you will also have the opportunity to participate in our Conversation Partners Program to further improve your English and learn more about American culture by interacting with an American student outside the classroom. This has been a wellreceived program by both ESL students and participating American students. 

    We also want you to know that all instructors in our program are professionally trained. Most of them have a Master’s degree in TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or a related academic field. They know how to help you improve your language skills, can help you adjust to the new environment, and are willing to work hard to help you become more proficient in the shortest time possible. We know you will be working hard too. We are so glad that you have come from afar to join our program, and we will do our best to make sure you will have as good an education at Murray State as you can expect of any quality ESL program in the United States.

    Some of the best college memories are made when living on campus. Murray State’s nine residential halls — including the impressive new Hollis C. Franklin hall, which is the size of two football fields — offer perks like common areas, on-site games and free laundry facilities. They’re located a short walk from the academic buildings, Winslow Dining Hall, the Wellness Center and football games at Roy Stewart Stadium.

    International students gain leadership skills through involvement in any of the 150 student organizations on campus. 

    Traditions Display your vocal talent in the annual All Campus Sing competition, and showcase the best of your home country in the International Bazaar. Attend events during homecoming week — the Main Street parade, Tent City and the football game. 

    Stay active by working out in the Susan A. Bauernfeind Recreation Center, which includes an indoor swimming pool, track, basketball courts, dance courses and exercise equipment. Also, participate in various intramural sports teams, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, water polo and cricket. 

    Living Learning Communities 
    Involve yourself in the residential college system to enhance your college experience by participating in a broad range of cultural and intellectual activities with fellow students and faculty. 

    Watch theatrical productions, musicals and concerts on campus in the 2,500-seat Lovett Auditorium. You may also watch international movies during Cinema International, a weekly screening of movies from around the world. 

    Murray State University has a long tradition of school spirit and exciting competition in 15 NCAA Division I sports. 

    Visiting Speakers 
    Attend lectures by prominent individuals. Previous speakers have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King III and Spike Lee. 

Getting to the school from the airport

  • New international students, including ESL Program students, should plan to arrive at the Nashville, Tennessee international airport within the shuttle service days.

    The Nashville airport is the largest airport near Murray, Kentucky, but because it is a two-hour drive to Murray, the ESL Program provides shuttle service from the airport to Murray State University. There is a $75 charge for airport pick-up which will be billed along with your tuition and fees. (The airport pick-up charge is non-refundable unless you cancel at least four hours prior to your original arrival time.)

    If a student needs airport pick-up on any date other than the shuttle dates (see above), the charge is $125.

    Information on this shuttle and a request that you let the ESL program know of your exact arrival will come with your I-20. Your I-20 packet will contain all your arrival information in it, and you should let the ESL Program know as soon as possible when you will arrive. Either a student worker or a staff member in the program will greet you at the airport.

    Shuttle Passengers (August & January Shuttles Only)

    Please note that the shuttle will be picking up many students whose flight times will vary. For this reason, the shuttle departs from Nashville for Murray at 5:00 pm each day during the shuttle days in August, October, March and June.  In January, however, the shuttle departs from Nashville for Murray at 4:00 pm.  If your flight arrives in Nashville after the shuttle departure time from Nashville, you will need to stay in Nashville overnight and be picked up on the following day.
