  • UCSB Extension, the continuing education division of the University of California Santa Barbara, provides educational outreach to local and global student communities. In addition to offering a wide range of advanced English and professional-level courses and certificates, our division provides a gateway for students to take university courses alongside students enrolled in UCSB degree programs.

  • Curriculum :
    Step 1 : Apply
    To Submit your Application you will need: 
    - High school transcript and diploma (GPA 2.7)
    - English language proficiency (TOEFL 75; IELTS 6.0; Duolingo 95; CET-4 500)
    - Copy of passport
    - Proof of financial eligibility 

    Step 2 : Summer English Academy
    Coursework will include:
    - Academic Reading and Writing
    - Language and Culture
    - Grammar 
    - Speaking and Pronunciation
    *The English training is 4 hours per day, 4 days a week, for 6 weeks. 

    Step 3 :  Academic Year
    Fall Quarter:
    - 1 General education course 
    - 2 Academic english language preparation courses
    Winter Quarter:
    - 3 General education courses 
    Spring Quarter: 
    - 3 General education courses 

    Step 4 : Transfer to SBCC
    After Spring quarter, students will transfer to Santa Barbara City College to complete their General Education requirements
    UCSB will assist with applying to Santa Barbara City College and work closely with advisors there to get students enrolled

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    3+1 prepares international college students for future graduate study. Students will spend their final year at UCSB to get study abroad experience and to prepare for applying to a US graduate program. Students will take courses alongside UCSB matriculated students, and earn UC units to transfer to their home university bachelor's degree, and possibly future graduate programs.


    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    -Give international undergraduate students the opportunity to take courses at a top-ranked US University as they earn their Bachelor’s degree at their home university
    -Establish eligibility to apply for OPT to work in the US for a year, if students complete 3 quarters      
    -Personalized advising provided to increase chances for admission to US graduate schools
    -Improve international students competence based on academic standards at US graduate schools

  • Through the University Immersion Program, international students may enroll in UCSB academic and/or professional development courses in a wide variety of disciplines. This program offers an excellent way to experience university life in the U.S. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a classroom environment dedicated to teaching applicable skills, and to gain knowledge necessary for success in the global workforce. The credits earned may be transferred to universities around the world or used to complement students’ professional and academic goals.

  • Community Housing Office
    UCSB Community Housing Office (CHO), offers international UCSB Extension students help with off-campus, non-university rental housing in Isla Vista, Goleta, and Santa Barbara. CHO provides rental listings, rental advice, and roommate services. It also provides a videotaping service (for a small fee) to videotape rentals before you move in and after you move out (to document the condition of the unit) to secure the security deposit. To start searching for housing and gain access to services, you must register with UCSB Community Housing Office (CHO); click Extension International Programs.
    Make sure to contact CHO before you rent housing (sign or take over a lease)
    Start your housing search early
    It is difficult to find housing at the beginning of the quarter. Our local area is experiencing a tight housing market.

    University-Owned Housing
    UCSB Housing and Residential Services offer university-owned apartment housing to international UCSB Extension students. For information, descriptions of housing options, and rental applications go to: Extension Housing and Residential Services.
    University-owned apartments are on a space-available basis and are rarely available for fall quarter; availability for winter and spring quarters is much more likely. Apartments are fully furnished and include all utilities.
    Note: Visiting, international students may apply for university-owned apartment housing; students enrolled in a degree program at UCSB have priority. If spaces remain, international students are offered a space.
    University-owned housing costs are payable quarterly at the Billing Accounts Receivable Office (BARC), Room 1212, Student Affairs and Administrative Services, UCSB.
