Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP)About the
The overall mission of the Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP), which was established in 1982 at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), is to provide International Students with quality intensive academic English language instruction and a cultural orientation to the United States in preparation for study at the University of Northern Iowa or other institution of higher learning. Through its many programs, events, and connections on and off-campus, the CIEP seeks to provide students with the cultural knowledge and awareness which they will need to function well both academically and socially as well as prepare students already enrolled in an academic program of study at UNI or preparing for enrollment to a college or university, with the academic skills necessary to be successful. The CIEP sessions begin in August, October, January, March and June. Each session provides 20 classroom hours per week of English language study and cultural orientation. Experienced instructors teach small classes; the CIEP tries to limit its class size to 16 students. Classroom teaching combines instructor presentations, group work and individual projects. Elective courses are available as well.

UNI has a long and rich history of service dating back to the mid-1800’s. In 1866, an orphanage for children affected by the Civil War was established in Cedar Falls. In a few years’ time, it became apparent that the building’s usefulness would shortly be coming to an end as orphans grew up and moved out into the world. Iowans saw an opportunity and seized it; the Iowa State Normal School – an institution created for and devoted to the training of teachers – was founded in 1876. Since its inception, the institution has also gone by the names of the Iowa State Normal School, Iowa State Teachers College, State College of Iowa, and most currently, University of Northern Iowa. True to its roots, UNI continues to emphasize hands-on service learning and retains the proud distinction of leading Iowa’s number-one teacher education program. Today’s UNI also offers more than 90 majors to choose from, giving students the opportunity to explore a variety of interests and prepare for success after college. Outside of the classroom, UNI’s vibrant campus is home to 300+ student clubs and organizations, 17 Division I collegiate sports teams, a multitude of fine arts options, and more.

Benefit, Goal of this course : This program includes specialized classes of conversation and culture. It also provides the chance to interact with many groups of Americans: students, young children and the elderly, Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of shopping, learning and culture excursions.
Curriculum : The program offers English language lessons focusing on conversation and speaking skills. Students will participate in an intensive English class about listening and speaking, an American culture class, and a unique conversation class just for summer students. The program could be customized for three or four weeks.
Classroom Hour : Each session provides 20 classroom hours per week of English language study and cultural orientation. Every week, each full-time CIEP student receives 4 hours of classroom work daily (Monday through Friday)

Students can choose from a number of living options that include on-campus residence halls or apartment living, as well as off-campus apartments. Living in UNI's on-campus housing offers the best combination of convenience, low-cost living and great opportunities for involvement. Nine-month and 12-month housing is available. Students with dependents or students 23 years or older may apply for university apartments. Convenient facilities for laundry, mail, studying, recreation and computer lab accessDining centers offer a variety of options including salad bars, deli, stir fry, and vegetarian options.
Surrounding Area
The University of Northern Iowa campus is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The population of the Cedar Falls/Waterloo is 110,000. The university’s location in Cedar Falls provides student with many advantages of a large city, but in a smaller, peaceful, clean and safe atmosphere in which to study and live. Cedar Falls is in northeast Iowa, not far from Chicago and Minneapolis, and is served by the Waterloo, Iowa Municipal Airport(ALO) and the Eastern Iowa Airport(CID) in Cedar Radpids, Iowa.
Facilities
UNI campus has two dining facilities, a library, student union, student health center, computer facilities, counseling center, a wellness and recreation center located within minutes of the student dormitories. All CIEP students will have full access to campus facilities. The Wellness/ Recreation Center (WRC) is a state of the art facility completed in 1998.The WRC has multiple non-programmed areas for social interaction. The two main social areas are the lower level and ground level lounges which feature spectacular views of the competitive pool, leisure pool and elevated track. Visitors to these lounges will also find benches, picnic tables and Kettler table tennis equipment. Paddles and balls can be checked out at the main welcome desk.
Activity
The CIEP offers activities which allow opportunities for international students to meet other international and American students, while learning about American culture and celebrations. The different activities provided are: coffee hours, holiday parties, potlucks, movie and game nights, field trips, and cultural lectures. There is also a Conversation Partner Program, International Friendship Host Family Program, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). These are important listening and speaking activities for CIEP students. They provide students enjoyable opportunities to develop English skills outside the classroom, as well as to learn about living in the American culture.
不管在學校所提供的資源、課餘休閒活動、居住品質、城市友好度等各方面，我均非常滿意。我很開心能夠選擇University of Northern Iowa作為我英文學習的地方。經由這次的遊學，我體驗到美國大學生的生活與台灣的不一樣，並非台灣比較差外國比較好，而是在美國這邊，學校或者宿舍單位，均會舉辦一些活動讓學生參加，舉凡提供爆米花飲料的免費院線電影欣賞、居民萬聖節派對、、電影欣賞與烤棉花糖、泡泡足球等等，學校或者學生非常注重社交活動，或者至少沒這麼嚴重，整體而言，課業之外的生活品質，與台灣不太一樣，與我過去的經驗相比，我感覺似乎比較健康與開心~~
