  • The VIU campus is located on beautiful central Vancouver Island in Nanaimo - a small, safe city. The local and academic communities provide students with many opportunities to improve their English skills, as well as understand and participate in Canadian culture. VIU English Language Centre, offers students a unique University campus experience. We are fully accredited and offer flexible programs to develop communication skills (7 or 14 weeks) and academic preparation skills (14 weeks). Choose VIU's Language and Culture Program for short-term English studies (3 or 4 weeks). The English Language Centre staff and faculty help you achieve your goals.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    Academic Preparation program is for students who wish to enter English University programs and is a bridge program from ESL to VIU programs. There are total of five AP steps. AP 1 focuses on sentence structure, Reading&Writing Skills, Grammar and pronounciation; AP 2 is on Paragraph Development, Grammar Applications, Reading and Writing and Pronunciation Practice; AP 3 has Introduction to Academic Writing, Cultural Studies and Integrated Skills on all English parts; AP 4 is on Academic Essays, Critical Reading Skills, Academic Communication Skills and Academic Lecture; AP 5 focuses on Research skills and paper, Academic preparation skills and Academic Study and Analysis Skills. 

    Curriculum :
    Academic Preparation program is a 5 level integrated skills program of 14 weeks. There's 20 hours of instruction per week including up to 2 elective. The course starts in January, May or September.

Accommodation

  • Our on-campus residence village is located near the heart of the campus, close to classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasium, library, bookstore, and the Centre for International Education. The 389 spaces offer a mix of accommodation choices from single private rooms with semi-private bathroom to 4 bedroom apartments. Rooms are wired for telephone, cable television, and Internet access. There are specially-designed suites for students with disabilities. Students living in residence also have easy access to VIU events, activities and nearby Nanaimo Parks and Recreation facilities, including the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Student residence does not provide bedding, dishes or food. In emergency cases, bed linens and pillowcases are available for a short-term loan. Students can bring all bedding supplies from their home country or purchase them upon their arrival in Nanaimo. Kitchen facilities are available in the Student Residences; meals can also be purchased in two campus cafeterias, open weekdays during school hours.

Surrounding Area

  • Victoria, Vancouver, and Long Beach for shopping, sightseeing, exploring British Columbia’s beautiful coast, and visit popular tourist sites. In winter, students have the opportunity to snowboard or ski at Mt. Washington, a 75 minute drive from Vancouver Island University. VIU's gymnasium also offers campus-wide activities and intra-mural sports programs which are open to all students. These activities are a great way to get involved with campus life and meet new friends.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • Arriving to Vancouver Island University
     Vancouver Island University is located less than a 20-minute drive from the Nanaimo Airport (YCD) and a 10-minute drive from downtown Nanaimo and the Departure Bay ferry terminal. Students who are staying in homestay or peerstay will be picked up by their homestay or peerstay families at the point of entry in Nanaimo. 

    Arriving in Nanaimo
    By air Students traveling to Canada from overseas by air should book their airline ticket to Nanaimo Airport (YCD). Students will change planes at Vancouver International Airport. There are 20-minute flights from Vancouver to Nanaimo Airport.
    By ferry
    There are two car/passenger ferries from Vancouver to Nanaimo: 
    (1) from Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver to Departure Bay, close to downtown Nanaimo. *Recommended
    (2) from the Vancouver port of Tsawwassen to Duke Point, south of Nanaimo.

저는 밴쿠버아일랜드대학 14주 영어커뮤니케이션프로그램(ECP)과정을 들었어요. 우선 VIU는 캐나다 나나이모섬에 위치해있요. 나나이모섬자체가 너무 예쁘고 경치도좋고 또 캐나다에서 가장 안전한 곳이에요. ECP프로그램은 영어커뮤니케이션 능력을 향상시키는 프로그램인데 수업내용도 정말 흥미롭고 영어도 정말 많이 늘었어요. 일주일에 25시간정도 강의를 듣게되는데 수업은 거의 회화수업으로 진행되고 작문이나 문법, 전반적인 영어에 대해서 배우게되요. 저는 영어 스피킹 때문에 이 프로그램을 선택했는데 만약 스피킹이 부족하신분이 들으시게되면 정말 많이 도움되실거에요. 매일 과제도 있고 다양한 활동들을 하게되요. 봉사활동도하고, 롱비치에 가서 놀기도하고 다른지역으로 여행도 다녀오고, 3~4개월이 짧다고 생각했는데 정말 많이 움직였어요. 캐나다 현지 학생들 가정에서 홈스테이 체험도 했고 학교에서 만난 친구들하고 어울려 놀면서 영어도 자연스럽게 많이 늘었어요. 교류회도 정기적으로 있구요. 긴 시간은 아니지만 굉장히 저한테 유익하고 즐거웠던 어학연수였어요.

私はバンクーバーアイルランド大学で14週英語コミュニケーションプログラムを聞きました。まずVIUはカナダのナナイモ島にあります。ナナイモはすっごく綺麗で景色も美しいです。そしてカナダで一番安全なところだそうです。ECPプログラムは英語コミュニケーション能力を向上させるプログラムです。授業の内容も楽しいですし英語もすごく上がりました。一週間に25時間ぐらい授業をうけますが授業はだいたい会話の授業で行われますし、作文や文法のような全般的な英語についても学ぶことになります。私は英語スピーキングのためにこのプラグラムを受けましたが、もしスピーキングげ苦手な人にはとても役に立つと思います。毎日宿題もありますし、様々な活動をします。ボランティアーもしますしロングビーチであそんだり他の地域へ旅行したり、3~4ヶ月は短いとおもいましたが、本当に多く動きました。カナダ現地学生の家庭でホームステー体験もしました。学校で会った友達と付き合いながら自然に英語実力もあがってね。交流会も毎週参加したし。長い期間ではないですが私にとって忘れない記憶になりました。
