Columbia Academy About the

  • The Mission of Columbia Academy is to provide a loving and caring learning environment for our students. This allows students to be educated and well prepared for life, with personal and academic goals set and reached during their time at Columbia Academy.

    The School has its own Happiness Course, a BC certified course that is derived from a course offered by Harvard University.Columbia Academy also encourages students to set up many clubs in order to help them thrive. For example, a teacher-led WeLove Club enables students to learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships with self and others. The school also has a student-led Helping Club which encourages students to do small acts of kindness to others. Furthermore, all students at Columbia Academy volunteer in this community. These acts of benevolence encourage students to better understand the world they live in by participating in their own community in a positive manner, and by giving back to the community at large.

    Our students will not only learn academic skills, but will also develop key virtues such as happiness, compassion, integrity, resilience and responsibility during the time spent at Columbia Academy. Students will be inspired to become fine and happy people, and bring these values to their society. Our mission is to have each and every student see the world full of opportunities and live a successful and happy life after being a part of Columbia Academy.   • CA welcomes dedicated and hard-working students who aim for the best universities in the world. We recognize that the pathway to success begins at a young age, and so our school is developing a junior secondary program for grades eight and nine to start in September 2020, in addition to our senior graduation program.

    In addition to the above courses, students will have the option to take upper level courses during their grade eight and nine programming, which can allow them earlier access to AP and SAT courses when they enter the senior years graduation program.

    As always, excellent CA students will receive personalized curriculum planning to support them in reaching their goal of admission to the world’s Top 20 universities. Junior program students will also have the full service of our extra curricular planning, including volunteer opportunities, student clubs, school competitions, and work with our charitable projects and partners.  Please note that spaces in our CA junior secondary program are limited.

Course information

  • Graduation requirements are determined by the BC Ministry of Education. For more information, please visit BC Education.
    Students are required to complete 20 courses (80 credits) to graduate and receive the BC Dogwood Diploma.
    Out of 20 courses (80 credits), there should be at least 4 courses (16 credits) at Grade 12 level, including a Grade 12 Language Art course.
    All Columbia Academy students complete the popular Happiness 12 class as a required part of their graduation program with our school. This unique course is a foundational component of the Columbia Academy learning experience, and has been adapted from course materials developed by Harvard University to provide graduation credit in the B.C. Graduation Program. This course is also accepted by many universities as part of students’ Grade 12 course requirements. All CA students complete this course before their graduation.
    The list on the following lists some of the courses offered by Columbia Academy during a school semester. Students need 13 required courses and 7 elective courses in order to graduate. Students aiming for top universities might require additional courses.

    Students must also take two provincial examinations before graduation. The two exams are the Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment and the Grade 10 Graduation Literacy Assessment. The ministry will also introduce a third assessment, the Grade 12 Graduation Literacy Assessment, in 2021/2022.
    Columbia Academy is fully certified and fully bonded with the BC Ministry of Education, students will receive the BC Dogwood Diploma upon graduation from our high school program.

  • To participate in our homestay program, students should inform the school at least two weeks in advance. The placement procedure follows these 3 steps:

    Step 1:Once the student receives the student visa, he/she needs to contact school immediately and submit the following documents.
    Step 2:Homestay Application Form
    Step 3: Homestay Application Fee of $400
    First month homestay fee (the fee varies from $1300 to $1500 per month, depending on the location)

Activity


  • The activities that are provided are appropriate to the season. For example, in summer we hold a school barbecue in Stanley Park and volleyball on the beach; in winter, we organize a ski trip. At any time of year, teachers will take students on field trips to cultural events, the outstanding Vancouver Public Library’s main branch, and so on. As we are located in one of the world’s most diverse and beautiful cities, there are many activities available all year round.

    The school also encourages students to set up clubs that reflect the students’ own interests, including anything from programming to politics or photography to fashion design. Such clubs provide an environment for people to socialize, work together, and learn more about their common interests.

    In addition to the student-led clubs, there are a number of clubs set up by the school. These clubs are led by teaching staff or approved external experts, and have included topics such as Toastmasters’ Club, Photoshop Club, Meditation Club, Food Science Club, and Laughing Yoga Club, to name a few. The precise school clubs that are offered each semester vary based on student interest and the number of club registrants.

    Student clubs and school clubs normally meet after school or on the weekend, and both are a valued part of our educational programming
