Taejon Christian International School (TCIS) About the

  • A Rich History of Excellence

TCIS is one of the longest running international schools in South Korea. Established in 1958 by missionaries looking for a safe, quiet, and relevant location within the country, TCIS has a long history and a reputation for both top academics and student care.

The First Three Programme IB School in Korea

TCIS was the first Three Program IB School in Korea. Our experience is a huge asset for students, and it has allowed us to become a leader for sharing the IB curriculum in Korea. Within the IB, we guide children through a program of study that prepares them for lifelong learning and makes them attractive to top universities all around the world. Our students have a record for engaging well with the curriculum and principles of IB, and they consistently achieve well above the world average.

    Small School Advantage

Part of the reason for this lies within the relatively small and very collaborative community. Having a small school atmosphere makes learning a very personal experience. Small class sizes and student-teacher ratios are positive characteristics, promoting contact time and the potential for deeper learning. Faculty can often better assist students and form more of those valuable mentor relationships, while the close-knit student community creates a supportive peer group that inspires each other to grow.

    Supportive Community

There is a real warmth and joy here that is felt when one exeriences the community working together. A feeling of purpose, kindness, and mutual respect is exactly the setting needed for great educational work to happen.

About the  Taejon Christian International School (TCIS)

  • At TCIS, the College Counselors take a personalized approach, meeting individually with each student and family. The College Counselor visits the Junior Class throughout their school year to begin preparing them for their college process. Seniors have personal meetings approximately every two weeks. From the introspective beginnings of college research, to collaborating as we identify appropriate university choices, we encourage students and help them put their best foot forward in their applications. By listening and counseling as they make their decisions on where to attend, we take pride in our attentiveness to the needs and care of each student. Our greatest rewards come as we watch our students gain in self-awareness and confidence, knowing they are prepared to thrive as scholars, community members, and servant leaders in colleges and beyond.

Our College Counseling department provides expert, professional knowledge about the entire college admissions process. From preparing students for interviews to holding admissions essay-writing and financial aid seminars, to calling a university admissions officer for an immediate answer to any question, TCIS’s College Counselors are a unique and indispensable resource to our students and families.

  • Focus of Study :
    Kindergarten to Grade 5

Benefit, Goal of this course :

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework specifically designed for the international education of students aged 4 to 12. The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in local, national, and global environments. The curriculum represents a combination of research and experience; it includes excellent teaching and learning practices derived from a variety of national systems and independent schools from around the world. It is an international, transdisciplinary programme.

The PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds, and encompassing social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs in addition to academic progress. Within the PYP, it is believed that student learning is best done when it is authentic and relevant to the “real” world. The PYP curriculum has an international perspective where the diversity of student experiences and backgrounds is welcomed and celebrated.

    Curriculum :

TCIS is an IB World School and provides the complete continuum of the three IB programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). Dedicated and invested professionals at TCIS have collaborated for many years to design and implement a vertically aligned written, taught, and assessed curriculum that prepares TCIS graduates for a successful transition to university and into the workplace.

The IB provides high-quality professional development, regional and international conferences, detailed IB standards and practices, and rigorous evaluation processes to ensure the successful implementation of the three programmes. International families can confidently transition among IB schools around the world and be assured their children will experience common learning environments.

The IB Learner Profile connects IB programmes and schools across all continents. The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

TCIS school leaders, teachers, and students continually strive to grow and develop in response to the mission statement of the International Baccalaureate.

  • Focus of Study :
    Middle years

Benefit, Goal of this course :

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students between the ages of 11-16. The five-year program offers an educational approach that embraces, yet transcends, traditional school subjects.

Students at this age are in an important phase of personal and intellectual development. An educational program needs to provide them with discipline, skills, and challenging standards, but also with creativity and flexibility. The IB builds the MYP around these considerations, but it is also concerned with students developing a personal value system for guiding their own lives as thoughtful members of local and global communities.

    Curriculum :
Intercultural Awareness - Today's student should engage with and explore not only your own culture, but other cultures as well. This is especially appropriate in the international school setting and an idea supported in both academic and co-curricular programs at TCIS.Holistic Learning - All knowledge is interrelated and education is about developing a whole person. The MYP program provides a thorough study of the traditional Secondary School disciplines, but it also emphasizes the interrelatedness of these disciplines.Communication - Students should be encouraged to engage and grow in open and effective communication. This is not limited to speech and written communication, but in a variety of forms.
