About the  Center for English as a Second Language

  • Since the fall of 1970, when the University of Sonora in Hermosillo sent 22 engineers to the UA to perfect their English language skills before beginning their graduate degrees in the College of Engineering, CESL has trained thousands of undergraduate and graduate students from nearly 100 countries for academic study at the University of Arizona. As a self-funding unit, CESL strategically invests in marketing and recruitment efforts around the globe. In recent years, with a netwiork of recruitment agents and affiliate agreements, CESL has been recruiting many students to the UA. CESL directly transfers students to the UA which eventually translates into thousands of dollars in tuition brought to the UA via CESL students. Located in the geographic center of The University of Arizona campus, CESL enjoys its own modern learning facilities dedicated exclusively to English language training, U.S. cultural studies and special programs. CESL operates a 19,547 square-foot building of classroom and administrative space in the heart of The University of Arizona campus. Its building has been recognized by the U.S. Registry of Historic Places for its intrinsic value and southwestern architectural beauty.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
CESL provides superior English language instruction through a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for academic and professional success. English language classes serve the linguistic and professional development needs of The University of Arizona and the greater global community. CESL promotes cultural and linguistic diversity and understanding through sensitivity, professionalism, and collaboration both on and off campus. One important feature of the CESL curriculum is its flexibility. CESL's classes are active and require intense student participation to improve individual language skills.

Benefit, Goal of this course :
In addition to the full-time program, CESL students can choose to take skill-based classes at additional cost, spend the time in our independent study lab, or simply concentrate on the required core classes. Students should expect to repeat at least one level at the intermediate and advanced levels.

Location

Accommodation

  • Apartments Renting an Apartment for Students should expect to pay about $600.00-$1000.00 a month to rent an apartment. To live alone in a studio or one-bedroom apartment, plan on about $800 plus utilities. Monthly rent varies depending on the length of the lease; the number of students sharing the apartment; whether the apartment has one or more bedrooms or if it has furniture, and whether the rent includes utilities. Available apartments within walking distance of the campus are limited, and availability of transportation is an important consideration. If students do not have cars or do not plan to ride a bicycle, they must look for apartments on direct bus routes. The University of Arizona, Office of Off-Campus Housing provides information about available apartments, finding an apartment, or finding a roommate. Roomate maching apartments These furnished apartments are near the university, within walking distance, easy bike ride, or on a city bus direct route to the university. There are 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartments with a shared living area and full kitchen. Each student signs a separate contract for themself. Each student has his/her own bedroom and may have their own bathroom but will share the bathroom with no more than one other person. The two complexes linked below will sign short-term leases for CESL students; move-in costs are minimized and in most cases utilities are already in service. This is the easiest, quickest, and most reasonable option for CESL students when they first arrive.
