  • Southern California State University founded in 2012 at Los Angeles, California, with a vision of a higher education institution. Currently, Southern California State University offers Certificate in Digital Business, Certificate in English Communication and Management, Associate of Arts in English Communication and Management, Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies, Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Business Administration Concentration in Business Statistics to both residential and distance education.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The English as a Second Language Certificate is designed to develop and expand upon students’ abilities to comprehend and utilize the English language. The foci of the program are Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary, Listening and Speaking, Conversation and Writing. Each discipline is provided for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Upon completion of each level, students will be assessed in order to determine eligibility for advancement.

    Upon completion of the English as a Second Language, students will be able to successfully:

    ● Abstract major ideas from a text, even when it contains complex language
    ● In speaking, ideas are generally well-developed and expressed coherently
    ● Understand many different ways that speakers use language for purposes other than to give information
    ● Heighten their awareness of correct usage of English grammar
    ● Enlarge their vocabulary throughout a variety of reading passages


    Curriculum :
    ESL Level - Beginning
    These courses cover the beginning level of reading and vocabulary, listening and speaking, and grammar and writing. Upon completion of these courses, students should be able to write introductory sentences and comprehend conversational sentences correctly. Class activities and assignments are geared towards expanding student knowledge and usage of English vocabulary and structure.

    ESL Level - Intermediate
    These courses cover the intermediate level of reading and vocabulary, listening and speaking, and grammar and writing. At the beginning of class, students are expected to write simple sentences and cohesive paragraphs correctly. Class activities and assignments aim to expand student knowledge and usage of English vocabulary and structure. In addition, these courses will focus on transitioning from paragraph to essay. Furthermore, students will review reading strategies, study skills, and library and research activities. Finally, students will be writing both in and outside of the classroom.

    ESL Level - Advanced
    These courses cover the advanced level of reading and vocabulary, listening and speaking, and grammar and writing. Upon completing these courses, students should be able to read and write college-level sentences and cohesive paragraphs. Also, students should be able to converse sufficiently and be prepared for college-level academic work. Class activities and assignments aim to expand student knowledge and usage of English vocabulary and structure.

    Classroom Hour :
    All students are required to take the total of 1,080 clock hours of the courses.

    2. A baccalaureate degree from a college or university.
    3. A completed Application for Admission form.
    4. For international students: Proof of proficiency in the English language. Students must produce results of a TOEFL score of at least 520 paper–based (190 computerized) (68 internet based) or pass the University’s English exam.

  • Southern California State University does not have a dormitory, but it does provide housing literature and other informational material regarding housing to students (e.g., flyers, brochures, web links, and a list of student housing organizations), it does not provide any assistance with housing arrangements; as such, Southern California State University does not secure, assess or evaluate student housing locations. The decision to use or not use student housing is the sole responsibility of the student. However, there are many apartment buildings and housing available in the area, and the cost ranges from $1200 - $1700 for a studio or a one-bedroom apartment.

Facilities

  • SCSU has a physical facility located at 3470 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 380, Los Angeles, CA 90010. This facility offers a range of amenities to support students' academic and social needs. There are 2 large classrooms and 2 medium size classrooms. SCSU also has a laboratory/e-library. The facility also features projectors in classrooms, facilitating multimedia presentations and enhancing the learning experience. A student lounge is provided, offering a space for relaxation, socializing, and enjoying meals. Inside the facility, there is a front desk area where students and visitors can seek assistance and find information. Students have access to a photocopy machine and printer for document reproduction and printing needs. Additionally, computer labs equipped with desktop computers and internet connectivity are available for students to complete their academic tasks.

Activity

  • Southern California State University has a close relationship with LA United Church, our neighbor church. SCSU students can enjoy the fruits of this friendship: they can attend chapel, partake of diverse church activities, and fellowship with the congregation. Pastor also comes and visits, giving speech and advice to students.
