Why This School?

  • - Staatliches Landschulheim Marquartstein is a Gymnasium located in Marquartstein, southern Bavaria, Germany.
    - The school offers a science- and technology-oriented program as well as another one focused on language.
    - It features extensive sports-related programs for skiing, tennis and more as well as mandatory courses in handicraft work in addition to academic education.

About the  Landschulheim Marquartstein

  • Founder Hermann Harless was an influential figure in the reformation of German second education, having worked on a new concept of it alongside Hermann Lietz. The result of their efforts were so-called Landerziehungsheime für Jungen ("Educational Community Home for Boys"). Their focus was put heavily on the development of a student's entire character rather than mere knowledge transfer. Those institutions were to be located away from big cities as to minimize their influence on children. Harless joined the Neue Deutsche Schule ("New German School") of Alexander Sutherland Neill, who later became the founder of the progressive Summerhill School. After the closure of Neue Deutsche Schule Harless founded his own boarding school in 1928 in the small town of Marquartstein near the Bavarian Alps. In its first year, only 16 students enrolled in Landschulheim Marquartstein. The concept of coeducation and a boarding school that accepts both girls and boys was new at that time and had only been implemented in a handful of schools across Germany. The success of Harless's approach reflected in a growing number of students and eventually earned him a permit to hold official Abitur graduation exams by 1940. This was a big achievement at the time as students from private schools normally had to take their final exams at a nearby public school. Hermann Harless was the school's principal until the forced nationalization by the Nazis in 1943. Although now under the regime's control, coeducation and mixed-sex boarding houses remained in place at the Landschulheim. Ironically, the boarding school was closed for female students four years after the end of WWII by ministerial decree. Due to dwindling numbers of boarding school residents, the mixed-sex system was brought back in 1989.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
The Landschulheim Marquartstein high school has developed its own educational concept based on its reform educational tradition , which goes back to the school's founder Herman Harless. The aim of this is the unity of knowledge transfer and personality development. That's why practice-oriented subjects such as choir, making music in various instrumental ensembles, acting in a total of three theater groups, dance courses and, last but not least, the beekeeping group have a permanent place at the Marquartstein high school.

Benefit, Goal of this course :
    - The boarding school with around 110 students and the day home with around 100 students are firmly connected to the school. In addition to encouraging effective and independent learning, teaching life and social skills is the most important goal of our educational work at the boarding school.
    - The very international orientation of the Marquartstein country school home can be seen in the high number of guest students and the opportunity to take part in various exchange programs (USA, Poland, China).
    - The workshops are a special feature of our school: work courses in the school's own workshops (gardening, carpentry, pottery and electrical workshop) are an integral part of the timetable for our fifth graders. You can also take these work courses as an elective in higher grades.
    - The pilot project “Crafts at the High School” has been running at our school since 2004. From the 8th grade onwards, some students undergo craft training as carpenters in addition to their high school education, which is completed with the journeyman's examination at the Chamber of Crafts.
    - We are a winter sports partner school for Nordic and Alpine skiing. In collaboration with the Chiemgau Ski Association and the Traunstein district, we balance school requirements with sporting commitment. That's why the ski model participants receive special school support.

    Curriculum :
The Marquartstein high school offers two training courses. In the linguistic training area, our students acquire language and communication skills in the cultural language Latin (from grade 5 or 6) as well as in the modern languages English (from grade 5 or 6) and French (from grade 8). From the 11th grade onwards, the first or second foreign language can be replaced by Spanish. This branch of training does not forego in-depth knowledge of the natural sciences and computer science. The scientific and technological training direction aims to  provide a particularly thorough introduction to natural sciences and computer science. Two foreign languages are offered in this branch (English or Latin from grades 5 or 6 and French from grade 6). In this branch, too, a foreign language can be replaced by Spanish from the 11th grade onwards. The branch choice is only determined from the 7th grade onwards.

Location

Accommodation

  • Since the Free State of Bavaria, as the institution's sponsor, also covers the costs of the teachers and educators, our contribution rate is comparatively moderate. For national students it amounts to 5,940 euros per year, payable in 12 monthly installments of  495.00 euros each. This amount includes room, board and supervision for each student. Sometimes there are additional costs, for example for excursions, activities, the ski pass or the journey home. These are not included in the estimated price.

Surrounding Area

  • Landschulheim Marquartstein was situated on Marquartstein Castle for 30 years since it was founded. Male students had their dorms in a nearby farmhouse called Nockerhof. The girls' boarding school was located at an estate in the village of Grabenstätt about 10 kilometers away, which proved difficult at times in terms of transporting students between the two locations. In 1958, the school moved its facilities to the "new castle" (Neues Schloss) which was eventually purchased in 1965. After the increase of student numbers since the boarding school's reopening for girls, new buildings for specific purposes were built like a science tract with appropriate equipment for Chemistry, Physics and Biology and a new gym. Since all the facilities are situated at the bottom of a mountain, parts of the school are built into the surrounding terrain, making them semi-subterranean. Generally, though, the school is known for its scenic location amidst the alpine foothills.

Facilities

  • Our students are housed in 4 different buildings.

The new building next to the old Berghof was only completed in September 2016. There is space for 16 girls from Q11 and Q12 in 8 rooms.

The communal kitchen in the old Berghof

Activity

  • WEEKEND AND FREE TIME
    - On the weekends we usually have boarding school operations every 14 days, and we always offer students who want to stay at the boarding school this weekend an attractive supporting program, usually with a focus on sports. Two minibuses are available and educators are always present, so that, depending on the weather and season, attractive activities can take place, such as skiing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and swimming.
    - Our students have a variety of opportunities to get involved in sports. In addition to sports that can be practiced all year round such as swimming, dancing, basketball, volleyball, football, etc., depending on the season and weather, we also offer mountain hiking, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, climbing, skiing and snowboarding.
    - Our final trip to Lake Garda is a special experience. For over 30 years we have been taking our boarding school students to the “Bavaria” campsite in Riva del Garda for a few days in mid-July. Sports activities such as climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, etc. are very popular.

    ADDITIONAL OFFERS
    - Since we are in the fortunate position of having our own carpentry shop, a gardening shop, a pottery shop and an electrical workshop on our school and boarding school grounds, our students can also get involved and trained in crafts.
    - We are happy to provide instrumental lessons; a piano is always available for practice. Our instrumental ensembles are always happy to welcome new members. Our school choir, which rehearses once a week in the chapel room of the House of Commons, is also looking forward to new members.
    - There is also great interest in the school's theater groups, in which the boarding school students are of course welcome to take part.
