Why This School?

  • - Today the boarding school is a state-recognized high school with all-day care, which has been run as a boarding and day school by Lars Humrich since 2022.
    - Today (2019) the school has a capacity of 265 student places, including around 140 boarding places, around 70 external and around 55 day home students.
    - Lessons take place in small classes of an average of 16 students to ensure individual attention to students.

About the  Schule Marienau

  • The Marienau School e. V. (until 2018 Marienau State Education Home ) in the Marienau district of the municipality of Dahlem in the Lüneburg district in Lower Saxony is a state-recognized private high school and boarding school. The boarding high school was founded in 1923 by the reform educator Max Bondy and his wife Gertrud as a school community, initially in Gandersheim as a rural educational home. The boarding school moved to the Marienau estate in 1929.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    Starting in the upper school means choosing a profile i.e. a set of related school subjects, such as, at Marienau, languages, sciences, social sciences or arts. These form the core of the Abitur which all students will study towards. Other subjects are automatically added to this profile to complete one’s list of subjects. The seminar trip in Year 12 deepens the students’ understanding of their profile subjects and leads to a written paper following the completion of their seminar research project. In the week before the October half-term holiday in Year 13 students undertake preparation for their Abitur.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    Choosing your subjects for Abitur is never easy so we are now offering an online assistant to help our students. Choosing one’s interests online will produce a possible profile and then by playing around with different subject combinations, different outcomes are produced which can then form the basis of a personal conversation with Dr Hinrichs, the Head of Upper School, who can help answer all your questions about the Abitur and the course leading up to it.

    Curriculum :
    Students at Marienau School take the Abitur as set by the regional government of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), which meets University entrance requirements and those of employers. As a result, the curriculum we follow in the Upper School as well as the other subjects which students can take following their choice of a profile, is also set by the regional government. Please note that Marienau School also offers Physical Education as an option for a fifth examination subject at Abitur. Examinations in all subjects are also set centrally by the Lower Saxony government. From the school year 2020/2021 we return to offering a three year Abitur course, with Year 11 regarded as the foundation year with all work in Years 12 and 13 counting towards the students’ final mark.

    Classroom Hour :
    The school community includes boarding pupils and day pupils and since the official school day runs from 8.00 till 1.00, day pupils are then allowed to go home but they can also choose to stay longer. For example, if they wish they can stay for lunch, supervised study time or for the many clubs and societies which we offer.

  • It has been a UNESCO project school since 2003 and is committed to the values ​​of the UNESCO Charter and Constitution . This means: Marienau feels particularly committed to the values ​​of the UNESCO Charter and Constitution regarding human rights, international peaceful understanding, protection of minorities, tolerance, environmental education and intercultural learning. Everyday education aims to anchor the idea of ​​a peaceful and tolerant world in the minds of children and young people. The boarding high school uses various occasions to experience the UNESCO idea in practice, such as the UNESCO project week and student exchanges. It is part of the Marienau school program to get to know foreign cultures, countries and people.

Facilities

  • The Marienau school is surrounded by over 80 hectares of forest, meadows, courtyards and buildings. Built from a former estate, numerous buildings with modern architecture now form a unit. The campus is centered around the main building including the main building square and the school's own pond. The various functions – living, school, boarding rooms, workshops, dining hall and utility rooms – are deliberately closely interlinked. The boarding school students live in small living areas in various houses on the school and boarding school grounds and are looked after by educational staff, so-called “gang parents”. Twin rooms are available for the lower level and single rooms for the upper level.

Activity

  • In addition to school training, there is an extensive range of working groups (AGs). The offer includes, among other things, sports such as climbing, golf, tennis and boxing, musical offers, creative groups, garden activities or groups on socially relevant topics. A “horse club” with the school's own horses is offered three times a week , in which young people can learn the basics of horse science under qualified guidance.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • The Marienau school is located about an hour's drive south-east of Hamburg near Dahlenburg in the district of Lüneburg.

    BY CAR
    From Lüneburg take the B216 in the direction of Dannenberg and exit after 22 km at Dahlenburg. In the village, after approx. 450 m, please turn left into Marienauer Weg and continue along the road. Leave Dahlenburg, pass a bridge and reach Neetzetalstraße in the district of Marienau. Follow the road to the end and you will reach the grounds of the Marienau school. For the navigation system: Please type in Neetzetalstraße 1, Dahlem-Marienau.

    BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
    You can reach Lüneburg railway station by Deutsche Bahn or Metronom trains. From there you can take the public transport buses to Dahlenburg (lines 5300 and 5304) or directly to the Marienau school (line 5362).

    The nearest international airport is Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel. The airport has a connection to the public transport network in Hamburg and can be reached quickly by car via the A7 motorway.
