About the  Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium Würzburg

  • The Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium is a medium-sized co-educational high school with a music and a language branch. In our school logo, these two branches are symbolically reflected in the violin and pen. The opportunity for artistic students to take part in the Music Excellence Branch is unique in Bavaria. Our day boarding school offers all-day care until at least 4 p.m. Students are accompanied by social educators in small groups as they complete their homework and are individually supported by specialist teachers from the high school. The day boarding school can also be booked flexibly for individual days of the week. In our modern and attractively equipped boarding school, we offer comprehensive care for students of all ages whose parents cannot afford it or if the daily journey home would take up too much time.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    Especially in the growing up phase, life is very difficult and exciting for our children and young people, as a lot is changing and a lot is in motion. During this time, children and young people need firm support and the security of the community. The children and young people feel very comfortable in our boarding school because our educational staff always have an open ear and take the time to talk. Since we accommodate children of different ages, we value a sense of responsibility, tolerance and willingness to help.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    Study times
    Depending on the age of the students, study times take place in one of seven large, completely renovated and modernly furnished study halls . The students learn Monday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m .; On Friday there is a shortened study time from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. During the break between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. our kitchen staff will offer an afternoon snack. From Monday to Thursday there is a supervised study period from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for students with afternoon lessons or special needs. Each student has their own workstation in our study halls , where tasks can be completed within the allotted time in a pleasant working atmosphere. A study hall group consists of 20-25 students, each of whom  is continuously supervised by a social worker or an educator. In addition, our school has several specialist teachers available every day to support students in specific subjects either flexibly or according to a fixed weekly schedule, individually or in small groups. Close cooperation with parents is important to us. We would like to inform you about your child's progress by phone or in person at regular intervals.

    Tutoring
    It is possible that we can arrange qualified tutoring from selected students through the boarding school for students who have special needs in certain subjects. The tutoring takes place in the rooms of the boarding school (or in the study halls) and costs 15 euros for 60 minutes.

    Evening study times
    Depending on their age and school performance, students are required to study in the evening after dinner on certain days. This time offers the opportunity to repeat vocabulary again, prepare for subjects and pack your school bag for the following day. Younger students in particular are supported and questioned by a teacher.

    Musical support
    Instrumental and music teachers from the MGG also come to the boarding school twice a week and support the students in practicing their instruments according to a set schedule.

    Individual learning plans
    If there are major difficulties at school, individual learning plans are drawn up for the students in coordination with the school's subject teaching, the implementation of which is monitored by a reference teacher.

    Curriculum :
    Musical branch
    The musical branch focuses on profile building in the subjects of art and music. Learning an instrument is compulsory and is also offered free of charge at the school. The foreign languages are English and Latin, although their order can be freely chosen. It is also possible to learn a late-beginning foreign language (Italian). The prerequisite for transfer is at least a grade of 2 in music, but not playing an instrument.

    ExcellenceBranch Music
    The “Music Department” established on February 5, 2009 by the then Minister of Education Ludwig Spaenle is a unique project of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture exclusively at this school. In the 2018/19 school year, the MGG founded the “Center for Musical Excellence in Würzburg” together with the PreCollege of the Würzburg University of Music. Along with this cooperation, the name was changed to “Excellence Branch Music”. The aim is to optimally support children and young people with outstanding musical talent. The combination of a range of musical subjects at the highest level with a school environment tailored to the needs of young musicians is intended to give young musicians the best opportunities for a career in the musical field and at the same time to complete a general education school.
    This Würzburg model is based on a three-stage concept:
    - the PreCollege of the HfM Würzburg for top talent;
    - the excellence branch of the high school, in which special musical talents are promoted with the option of switching to the PreCollege or full-time music course if they make appropriate progress;
    - the musical branch of the MGG.
    In addition to intensive instrumental lessons, theoretical basics (ear training, musical composition) are specifically taught. The Ministry of Culture also provided hours for accompaniment, a minor in piano and chamber music. The affiliated state boarding school offers non-resident students accommodation and practice opportunities for participation in the Excellence Branch as well as physical proximity to the Würzburg University of Music.

    Linguistic branch
    The special feature of the linguistic branch is the learning of a third foreign language in the 8th grade. As in the arts branch, English and Latin are the first two foreign languages and their order can also be freely chosen. The third foreign language in eighth grade is compulsory Spanish. A modern language range is also offered with English, French and Spanish as a third foreign language. In the linguistic branch, it is also possible to learn a late-beginning foreign language (Italian) as a replacement for the first or second foreign language.

These were officially handed over to the school family at the end of October 2008 by the person responsible for the material costs, the Free State of Bavaria. All other school buildings were renovated and modernized. This also includes equipping all classrooms with internet and projectors as well as redesigning the specialist rooms.

    The entire school is barrier-free . This includes a total of three elevators in the school building and boarding school. All entrances are also passable without obstacles. In addition to appropriate sanitary facilities in all parts of the building, the boarding school also has a barrier-free living room on the ground floor.

    Security
    There is a telephone in every room of the school and boarding school, and in several publicly accessible areas (entrances, stairwells) there are additional emergency telephones with a direct dial-up connection to “ 112 ”. All classrooms are equipped with a door viewer (inside) and a doorknob (outside). A signpost and color system ensures orientation in the house.
