Benefit, Goal of this course :
For many students, the boarding house acts as their second home for a good number of years. That is why it is very important to us that free time and weekends are rich and varied for the students. Strong friendships are formed through shared hobbies and activities and, in addition to the daily school and boarding school routine, talents are promoted, and shared experiences are created. Our ‘Gilden’ (clubs) are also particularly important to highlight. They are divided into the areas of sports, social activities and creativity. Alongside the ‘Gilden’, there is the opportunity to take instrumental lessons, sing in the choir or play in the school band. A voluntary church service also takes place every fortnight in the boarding school, which is pupil-led, under the guidance of Mrs. Elke Wichmann.
Curriculum :
Life in a boarding school means that students not only learn and spend time together with their classmates in the classroom, but also around the clock, seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Practical help from all here with time management, allowing a balance of intellectual, artistic, and sporting activities after the school day and at weekends, enables any new student to quickly find their way in our community. We find that discovering talents and strengths and building self-confidence, creates the foundation of a strong and active community. Because of this, it is important for us to make sure that the weekends here at the boarding school are packed with stimulating activities. From attending cultural events and sports competitions, to taking part in educational workshops and creative or scientific projects, there is never a boring weekend here at Roßleben. Alongside the many opportunities offered on site on our unique school grounds, boarders also have the chance to get to know the surrounding towns and cities. Our close proximity to Weimar, Erfurt, Naumburg, Halle and Leipzig, makes day trips to interesting towns and cities and visits to museums and theatres very straightforward. We are also very lucky to be located in amongst the beautiful Thüringen countryside where we frequently offer active weekends exploring the Saale-Unstrut region by canoe, or hiking up the Brocken mountain. As a rule, participation in these active weekends is voluntary, but on two weekends a month, our so-called Internatswochenenden (‘boarding school weekends’), all students stay on site. We traditionally start with a get-to-know-you weekend at the beginning of the school year, followed by group trips, celebrations, events, and then a summer party at the end of the school year. On our regular home weekends and during the holidays, we provide transport to Artern railway station and from there students start their journey home comfortably in all directions via the main stations of Erfurt, Halle, Leipzig and Magdeburg. Our younger overseas pupils stay in school every weekend, other than during the Autumn half-term, Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays. Alternatively they can stay with host families. Our older overseas students, on the other hand, often use these weekends to explore Germany and plan their own activities after consulting with us. In addition, if requested, we organise all the necessary airport transfers for our younger overseas students.
Classroom Hour :
After waking up at 6:30am, the students go to first breakfast which gives them a bit of time to get in the zone for the school day and hear any new updates from the ‘Internatsleiter’ (the Head of the boarding school). At 7:50am lessons start and then at first break the boarders have the chance to have a second breakfast on top. Lunch is after the sixth lesson and, depending on year group, the children have further lessons until 3pm. For our younger children, they have a large variety of ‘Gilden’ (hobbies) to take part in, or they can use their free time to take advantage of the expansive grounds to play sport, games, or simply relax.
