Why This School?

Gymnasium Max-Josef-Stift About the

  • Our grammar school Max-Josef-Stift is a state-run girls' grammar school with language and music branches in the heart of Munich. On our beautiful campus in the district of Bogenhausen, we also offer a day care center and a boarding school for our students.
Our school stands for openness and tolerance, modernity and tradition. The size of around 600 students allows us to personally perceive each individual, to advise them in detail and to support them individually.
We can look back on more than 200 years of history: when it was founded in 1813 by King Max I Joseph as the "Royal Educational Institute for Daughters of the Higher Class", the "Stift" was a boarding school for girls of all denominations.
We have remained a girls' school to this day, not only because we feel connected to the tradition, but because we have made the experience that as a girls' school we can support our pupils in a more targeted manner and strengthen their self-confidence. For example with regard to the MINT subjects (i.e. mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) or in the development of language, music and communication skills.
Our entire school community, students, teachers, parents and families see the Gymnasium Max-Josef-Stift as a place to learn and live. This is also reflected in our mission statement.

Surrounding Area

  • Formerly a farming village, Bogenhausen was not incorporated into the state capital of Munich until 1892, when it quickly became one of the city’s chicest and most popular places to live. You get a feel for the village-like atmosphere of old Bogenhausen today in the area around the old parish church of St. Georg and Bogenhausen cemetery. Many famous locals or people with close ties to the city found their final resting place here in the cemetery. The park of the Maximiliananlagen borders the Isar north and south of the Friedensengel (Angel of Peace). Below the Friedensengel, in the underpass of the pedestrian and bicycle path by the river, some of the city's most talented sprayers have made their mark with their graffiti.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • The Max-Josef-Stift is centrally yet quietly located on its own campus: numerous schoolgirls come from the surrounding Munich districts of Bogenhausen, Trudering, Berg am Laim, Lehel and Isarvorstadt, often by bike, many also thanks to the optimal transport connection by bus or underground -Rail. The stops Prinzregentenplatz (U4, Bus 100, Bus 54) and Böhmerwaldplatz (U4) are in the immediate vicinity. Our students come from the entire Munich catchment area.
The grounds of the MJS are characterized by several buildings that were created one after the other and harmoniously joined together, carefully designed and maintained green areas and gardens and clear boundaries of the campus due to the surrounding quiet residential streets. The building is not used by the city of Munich, e.g. as rooms for the VHS, as is practiced at many other public schools. The school family of the MJS is here among themselves.
