Course Information

  • Focus of Study
    GEOS offers a Super-Intensive English Course for those students who wants a drastic improvement of their English skills. During the morning and the afternoon, the students will join the Intensive English Course. They will join an elective course--such as TOEFL preparation program, writing, pronunciation or others--after the morning and afternoon courses.
     
    Curriculum
    A GEOS English class is known for its challenging curriculum that highlights oral communication - speaking and listening. Extensively trained instructors incorporate varieyt of lessons to help students gain conversational skills as much as possible. At the beginning of each course, students will be given a placement test that closely examines their English proficiency and thus places them in the appropriate level of class ranging from beginner to advanced, in six different difficulties. Also at the end of each term which lasts for twelve weeks, students will take a written exam and have teachers consult the result with them in order to receive personal feedbacks and advices. The exam will become the main tool to observe each student's progress. Progress reports will be handed out in a monthly term and a certificate will be issued at the end of the course by GEOS.

    Students can experience North American culture and practice their English by sharing a home with a host family. Students will have a private room with a bed, desk, and closet. They will also have most or all of their meals provided by the family. All families have been visited by members of our school's staff and live in safe, comfortable neighbourhoods close to the school.

    Comfort Apartment
    Shared self-catering apartment with double and single rooms, a shared bathroom and fully-equipped kitchen. The Comfort Apartments are central located in the heart of the city, near the school.
    - Services: The apartments are cleaned once a week, but students are requested to take care of the day-to-day cleaning. Bed-linen is provided; students are requested to bring their own towels. Fully-equipped kitchen with cabinets, sink, refridgerator, stove-top and oven.

    Private Residence
    GEOS also offers residential apartments from September until June, all of which are located in the general vicinity of the school. This accommodation is shared with other international students. The apartments are co-ed, however, shared bedrooms are same-gender. The apartments always include a well-equipped kitchen (including cooking utensils), a shared bathroom and living areas. The apartments vary in location, size and number of bedrooms, but expect to share with 2 – 3 other students. It is important to note that private residences are self-catering. Students are responsible for all meals.

  • The school is located in the heart of downtown Toronto, in the "Old Town Toronto" district near the corner of Adelaide and Church streets. We are located a few short blocks from King subway station, and streetcars are just a few minutes walk from the school. We are two blocks away from Yonge Street, Toronto's centre and the longest street in the world. From our school you can walk to the CN Tower, Eaton Centre, Rogers Centre, Air Canada Centre, and the Harbourfront. It is just steps to major spors (MLB, NHL, NBA), entertainment, transportation, and the excitement of the city.oronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. 要融入當地生活,免不了一定要用英文溝通,所以我建議多與當地同學互動,交朋友,多參加社區活動、校內社團或旅行等,都有幫助。像每年的滑雪旅行是我最期待的活動,不只可以去多倫多著名的雪場滑雪,也可以更加增進同學們之間的感情。另外,如果是住在寄宿家庭,也可與家庭成員多練習英語對話。我那時會每天固定用完晚餐之後跟寄宿家庭的爸爸媽媽聊天一小時,時間久了英文就會慢慢進步。對於不懂的地方我也會隨時問人,加拿大人都非常友善,也非常樂於回答問題。

在學校上課時我也喜歡與同學互動。西方社會的上課方式和東方社會有很大的差別,在加拿大,老師喜歡同學上課多發言討論,提出自己的看法,即使看法不同,老師也會鼓勵並尊重不同的意見。另外,老師也喜歡同學分組討論,在上課中發表,這樣可以培養學生自己主動思考及團體合作的能力。一般在台灣,老師通常是只授課,學生回家複習並準備考試,無形之中減少了不少學習的樂趣。而在課堂上有不懂的地方,下課時也可找老師討論,加拿大的老師都非常樂意在下課時間讓同學來問問題,上課若有不懂的地方可於下課時間找老師發問。
