The Charlottetown campus opened in 1998 and we’ve continued to grow since this time. Our school offers programs throughout the year with flexible start dates to meet every student's needs. We offer a variety of quality programs with small classes and excellent instruction. If your main focus is to improve your English, our Intensive English Program will help you reach your goal. The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is located in the outskirts of Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island, and is home to approximately 4000 students. These numbers allow UPEI to maintain small classes that promote maximum interaction between students and teachers. UPEI has the best student-teacher ratio in the country, and has been consistently ranked in the TOP 10 by “Maclean’s”, the prestigious news magazine. UPEI was also named Canada’s top university for student-faculty interaction in the 2006 National Survey of Student Engagement. Among its faculty, UPEI has many well-known and award-winning professors, of which, four have received the 3M Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s highest level of education award. The faculty and staff of UPEI strive to create a welcoming, safe, and caring environment, where all students have the opportunity to reach their potential as lifelong learners. The university offers bachelor’s degree programs in the arts, the sciences (including biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics, computer technology), education, nursing, business administration and veterinary medicine. UPEI also has graduate degrees for veterinary medicine, science, island studies, education, applied health services research and business administration (MBA). The business, physics and computer science programs all have cooperative education and internship components that provide students with a wide range of opportunities for social interaction.

Location

Accommodation

  • Homestay
Most students who study at our school choose to live with a host family. Homestay placements are done by one of our full-time staff so there is always someone at school
to answer questions about homestays. Our homestay coordinator visits and approves all of our homestay families before they can receive students. When you complete your registration form, you give us information such as your interests and hobbies. This information helps us match you with your new host family. Our goal is to find a family that shares your interests, where possible, so everyone will have a rewarding experience. Our homestay families are well-known for providing students with a friendly and caring environment. The profiles of our homestay families are very diverse. Some homestay families consist
of a mom, dad and children while others may be a single person with or without children, or an elderly couple whose children no longer live at home. Canadian families tend to have very active life styles. Daily exercise routines, busy work schedules and driving children to/from activities are part of normal family life here. Remember that Canadian family customs may be different from those in your own country. Participate where you can with your new homestay family. All our homestay families drive students to school and pick them up after class. During the warmer months, you may be able to borrow a bicycle from your host family so you can bike to school. Our families are normally no more than a 10 or 15 minute drive from the school.

Surrounding Area

  • Prince Edward Island is located on the eastern coast of Canada. You will find our province in the Gulf of St. Lawrence surrounded by the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. Prince Edward Island is 275 km from North Cape, the western most tip, to East Point, the point furthest east. The population of the entire province is 135,000. Charlottetown, the capital city, has a population of 30,000. Summerside, the second largest city, has a population of just over 14,500. Most students fly directly to Charlottetown. However, we also do airport pick-ups in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you are driving, you can take the ferry from Caribou, Nova Scotia. This ferry service operates from May to December. The Confederation Bridge is a quick, convenient way to come to Prince Edward Island. This 13-kilometre bridge joins Borden-Carleton, PEI and Cape Jourimain, NB. It is the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world. The Confederation Bridge opened on May 31, 1997 and takes approximately 10 minutes to cross. Tourism, farming and fishing are the three main industries in the province. Prince Edward Island has four distinct seasons. Spring is comfortable with temperatures that range from 8 to 22 degrees C. Come enjoy the miles of lupins (wild flowers which grow along the roads)!
