About the  Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)

  • In 1977, the University of North Texas (UNT) founded the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI). Since then, IELI has developed prestigious programs to help international students develop their academic skills in English. Our students earn a quality education, including skills in communication and academic environments. The academic English program is accredited. At IELI, we prepare students for continued success. IELI’s classrooms are conveniently located in the center of the UNT campus and many IELI students continue their education at UNT. The campus is located in the lively city of Denton, Texas and is is approximately 30 minutes north of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Conditional admission

  • Conditional Admission to UNT. Students may not need to take standardized exams. IELI offers conditional admission to many UNT undergraduate and graduate programs.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The IELI Academic English Program offers English courses that prepare international students for academic studies at a university. This program is ideal for students who want to study at the University of North Texas or at another university within the United States.

    Benefit, Goal of this course : 
    The Academic English Program consists of: 
    7 levels of English proficiency (0-6)
    Beginner through advanced levels
    5 terms offered each year
    8-week terms: Fall I, Fall II, Spring I, Spring II, Summer

    Curriculum : 
    Students attend 23 hours of class per week, Monday through Friday. These classes include core and supplemental classes. In addition to the class schedule, students will need to spend between 15 to 20 hours per week on homework assignments. Instructors offer office hours to help students outside of class. All new students take a placement test to determine their proficiency in the English language. Test results place students in levels 0 through 6 of the Academic English Program. Students do not need to prepare for the test.

    UNT has 14 dormitories that allow students the chance to live on campus. $4000-$6000/semester (2 IELITerms)

Facilities

  • Classrooms
    In 2015, the Intensive English Language Institute and UNT-International moved to the newly renovated Marquis Hall. There are 22 classrooms in Marquis Hall providing IELI with ample space. With all classrooms and both student lounges being upstairs from IELI’s Main Office, there are plenty of opportunities for students to study and relax all in one location.

    Labs
    IELI provides 2 computer labs; the multimedia lab and the instructional lab. In the multimedia lab, or mLab, students have access to 28 computers, printers, movies, books, and a variety of English practice materials. Movies and books may be checked out by students so practicing on weekends is still available and software is available anywhere students have access to the internet.

    The instructional lab (iLab) allows classes to use language learning software during class and provide additional computer instruction. IELI provides a number of workshops in this classroom as well to provide even more support to students. There are 15 computers available in this lab.  Both labs offer language learning software.

Activity

  • Each term, IELI organizes many field trips and social and cultural activities. These activities introduce students to American and world cultures.  During the field trips, students explore the surrounding cities, make new friends, and have fun! In addition to the field trips, IELI students participate in many events and parties.
