About the  English Language Institute (ELI)

  • This institution was established in 1955 at the University of Florida, and offers an intensive English program. This program prepares international students to enter an undergraduate or graduate degree programs at most of the universities in the States. The intensive content of the English programs also helps those students to improve their language skills for either personal or professional advancement. ELI also signifies in developing students cultural understanding and adjusting in Northern American life by experiencing through lots of activities.

Conditional admission

  • Students who shows outstanding improvement in English may be permitted to attend University of Florida under permission of ELI director and the class professor. Conditional Admission to the university is available for qualified students with fluent English. (graduate programs only)

Course Information

  • Focus of Study : 
    sentence structure, speaking practice with emphasis on vocabulary enrichment and language technology

    Benefit, Goal of this course : 
    If students want to learn English while having time to visit local cities and attractions, this program is the perfect choice!

    Curriculum :
     complete and brief ESL courses sessions are offered during the academic year and summer. Fall C and spring C are 14 weeks program, while Fall B and Spring B are 7 or 8 weeks long. Summer C is 12 weeks, and Summer B is 6 weeks. Depending on the season of enrollment and the term length, there may be 4 to 10 levels of instruction. When enrollment permits, the ELI creates a comfortable learning environment by initially separating students according to their age. Students are then placed into different appropriate levels for each of the skills that they will study in the courses (listening/speaking/grammar/reading/writing). Further more, the ELI offers elective courses in standard tests such as TOEFL, Business English, US culture, pronunciation, conversation strategies, computer application and other special courses that vary by term. 

    Classroom Hour :
     full time students will attend at least 23 hours of classroom instruction per week, but they may take up to 32 hours including elective and other substitute classes.
