Conditional admission

  • ESI works with several local housing providers to help the students while they stay in Berkeley. Students can visit the various providers websites in order to see pictures and learn what each has to offer. All agreements are made between the students and the housing providers, but ESI staff will help students as best we can. Housing optionsinclude UC Residence Hall, International House, YMCA and Orinda Homestay Program.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The Integrated Skills course is designed for students who want to develop their skills in grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Students develop in-depth language skills, learn critical thinking skills, and prepare for further academic studies.
     
    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    -Fluency development such as controlled practice, role-plays, model conversations, presentations, debate and discussion
    -Instruction in grammar and correct usage with error analysis exercises and grammar games
    -Focus on student pronunciation, intonation, and listening comprehension in both informal conversation and more formal academic speech using audio tapes, videos, pronunciation drills, short presentations.
    -Facilitating student awareness of culture through readings, cross-cultural contact assignments, and observation reports
    -Effective reading techniques and strategies through reading practice/comprehension and vocabulary exercises
    -Writing styles appropriate to academic or scholarly writing using in-class writing of short paragraphs or longer essays, peer editing and group discussion of common errors.
     
    Curriculum :
    All students take a Structure of English class and an Oral Communication Skills class. Each of these classes meets 6 hours per week, Mondays to Thursdays. In the Structure of English class, students study English grammar and practice it in both speaking and writing. A variety of activities allow students to improve their knowledge and use of increasingly complex grammar structures. Writing skills are taught, from basic sentence structures in the lower levels to more complex writing in the advanced levels. The Oral Communication Skills class focuses on listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills. Students increase their vocabulary, including idioms, by reading and speaking about American culture and the cultures of other countries. Activities such as small group discussions, oral presentations, and videotapes increase the studentsʼ fluency in English. In addition to the Structure of English and Oral Communication Skills classes, each student takes two afternoon classes. These concentrate on a single skill or area of interest, allowing students to work on individual weaknesses or study a subject of particular interest. Each class meets four hours per week, on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study and Benefits:
    This intensive course is designed to rapidly improve oral communication, listening comprehension, and knowledge of American culture. Students participate in classes focused on the rhythm of English pronunciation, American idioms, slang, and use of grammar in context. Class activities include contact assignments, interviews and oral presentations that significantly increase student confidence. Included in the course is an afternoon elective class such as: English for Business, Listening and Pronunciation, English through Film, or TOEFL Preparation. Additional after class activities such as, conversation practice class provide an opportunity for improving fluency.

    Curriculum :
    This course focuses on empowering students to communicate in English in the real world. The program encourages students to speak freely and use their English in class through discussions, student-created role-plays, pair-work and group-work activities. This student-centered approach enables paricipants to gain confidence and fluency in spoken idiomatic English. Classroom activities include: Functional language appropriate to specific situations (social and practical everyday activities), Pronunciation, intonation, and listening comprehension including comprehension of reduced American speech, Vocabulary and knowledge of idioms and slang, Facilitating student awareness of American culture through cross-cultural contact, observations, and projects, Fluency practice in real-world situations and Helping students refine grammatical structures important for oral communication.

Q:学校周辺の環境について教えて下さい。


A:はい。
English Studies Instituteはカリフォルニア州のバークレーに位置しています。
バークレーの気候は日本人にとって非常に過ごしやすく、
年間を通して乾燥しているため梅雨のような時期もなく快適に過ごせます。
夏場でも朝晩も涼しいので、何か羽織るものがあると便利です。
冬は11月後半から1月にかけて雨季となり、その間の気温は下がるので日本よりは暖かいですが、コートやジャケットが必要です。

学校周辺には、日本食が購入できるスーパーもあります。

English Studies Instituteは、カリフォルニアのバークレーという場所にあります。

周辺には有名なカリフォルニア大学のキャンパスがあり、学生の街という雰囲気がある活気のある街です。
私は今まで学生生活で勉強してきた英語はそんなに苦手というわけではなかったのですが、
大学で留学生と話す時、英語が全然出てこなくてすごく落ち込みました。
それがきっかけとなり、英語をもっと話せるようになりたいと思うようになりました。
そこで、こちらの学校の"コミュニケーション向上クラス"に申し込みました。
このクラスは、実際使える英語を勉強しようという目的のクラスで、毎日実際の場面を想定した会話練習をします。
クラスメートと一緒に考えたりするのが結構楽しくて、色々話すうちに仲良くなれました。
学校でたくさん話す機会があるので、外に行っても英語で自然と話せるようになりました。
学校の授業は午前中で終わるので、午後は自由時間なのですが、私はバークレーの街をブラブラしたり、
サンフランシスコに友人と遊びに行ったりしていました。
学校の休みを利用して留学したので、留学期間が思ったよりも短かったなと思い、少し残念でした。
帰ってくると、留学生の友人にも、英語がすごく上手になったと褒められて、とても自信がつきました。
それまでは思いもしませんでしたが、将来英語を活用できる仕事につきたいなと思うようになりました。

まゆり

1ヶ月間、短期で留学していました。

今回、観光メインの滞在だったので、
旅行者を対象に週12-16時間で授業が進められる Communication Skillsで1ヶ月間授業を受けました。
授業は朝の9時から12時までで、そのあとに特別追加授業がある日もあります。
授業と言っても文法や単語の授業ではなく、観光地めぐりやスポーツだったのでとても楽しかったです。

授業時間が短い分、自分の時間もたくさん取れるので
午後はカフェでゆっくり勉強したり、週末はクラスの友達と観光していました!
クラスが旅行者向けなので観光メインの学生がほとんどだったので
みんなで観光地について話したりなど文化も勉強しつつ英語力も伸ばせたかなと思います。

観光と勉強どっちも諦めきれない!という方にはとてもお薦めです^^
