About the  INTERLINK language

  • INTERLINK Language Centers at Indiana State University (ISU) has been helping students achieve their goals since 1987. Located in Terre Haute, Indiana, INTERLINK at ISU provides quality English training, cultural orientation and academic preparation. Most of our students go on to ISU after meeting their needs at INTERLINK, but others who do not plan to attend ISU choose INTERLINK at ISU for their ESL training. The ISU and INTERLINK partnership creates an environment that prepares students for challenging careers, and provides the tools and skills needed to achieve success in the modern world. Here are some of the skills that INTERLINK helps students improve the ability to speak English more fluently, to write effective essays, to understand spoken English, to understand different cultural perspectives and more, to conduct research and report findings in English, to engage in group work and team activities, and to use the Internet and other computer technology. Overlooking the rolling hills and farmlands of central Indiana, historic Terre Haute offers the friendliness and safety of a small town with the attractions of a midwestern city. With a population of 60,000, Terre Haute boasts scenic parks, theater, a symphony orchestra and a 10,000 seat university center that offers off-Broadway productions and famous musicians. About the  Indiana State University

  • The Princeton Review has named Indiana State as one of the "Best in the Midwest" seven years running, and the College of Education's Graduate Program was recently named as a 'Top 100' by U.S. News & World Report while the graduate program in nursing was recognized as among the "Top 75' in the nation by U.S. News. The magazine currently classifies Indiana State University as a tier 2 national university. The current Carnegie classification for ISU is Doctoral/Research University. Indiana State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. ISU is also included in Carnegie's new Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships category that recognizes substantial commitments to both an academic approach to mutually beneficial and respectful community collaboration and extensive outreach and partnerships. Indiana State offers 100+ majors, notably education, business, criminology, finance, insurance and risk management, nursing, athletic training, and construction technology; the university's graduate education, financial services, nursing and clinical psychology programs are nationally recognized. Indiana State is a diverse university, with 3.8% of students attending as international students and 19.5% of students belonging to a minority. Of the 19.5% minority students, 75.4% are African American, 8.3% are multiracial, 8.3 percent areHispanic and Latino American, 5.8 percent are Asian American, and 2.1 percent are Native American. Indiana State is the first public university in Indiana to require incoming freshmen to have a laptop. ISU offers Dell Latitude E6420 laptops to incoming freshmen with high high school GPAs of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) as part of its Laptop Initiative. ISU is a member of the College Consortium of Western Indiana. This membership allows students who are full-time at their home institution to take classes at the other member institutions of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Conditional admission

  • Some students have strong academic backgrounds and training but have not had enough preparation in English, as measured by the TOEFL test.  These students are given conditional admission to ISU.  They attend INTERLINK to improve their English.  When they complete INTERLINK's English program, they are fully admitted to ISU.  No TOEFL score is required in this instance.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study : 
    This program is an Intensive English language training for university-bound students as well as those who need to improve their English for personal and professional reasons in a student-centered, nurturing environment. Its Academic Focus is primarily on English for Academic Purposes, English for Law (VU), and English for Business (VU).

    -Opportunities for students to develop critical and analytical thinking skills and become independent learners.
    -Instruction in English for Business, English for Law, and English for Specific Purposes(ESP) as needed.
    -Integrated formal and experiential learning.
    -A student-centered curriculum emphasizing content-based learning
    -A holistic, pedagogically sound, approach to instruction in English for academic purposes in supportive nurturing environments.

    Curriculum : 
    The well-defined, five-level curriculum is specifically designed for university-bound students. Therefore, it emphasizes the communicative use of English, academic skills, and cultural orientation. The instructors of IEP help students pass through the various stages of adjustment and emotional growth in their new environment and promote mutual understanding and positive relationships on campus and in the community. At Colorado School of Mines, upper level students may receive instruction in English for Science and Technology (EST) and at Valparaiso University, law students wishing to receive LLM degrees may enroll in the English for Law (EL) program. Each level has 8 to 12 students.

Accommodation

  • On-campus housing is available to all applicants who enter the program in January or August and plan to study at INTERLINK for an entire semester (two terms). On-campus housing is usually only available at UNCG in summer . Students arriving in October or March can live on campus if space is available. Summer students can live on campus for four, eight, or twelve weeks. Applicants must make advance reservations for on-campus housing. We also arrange housing for students with carefully-selected American families. Students are encouraged to apply at least 12 weeks in advance to secure their preferred type of housing. Homestays are available at all campuses except UNCG.

Terre Haute is also home to two other institutions of higher learning. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has been consistently ranked as one of the best engineering schools in the United States (U.S. News and World Report). Located in a picturesque setting, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is one of America's oldest liberal arts colleges for women. Terre Haute is within a driving distance of 1-4 hours from Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati. The state capitol, Indianapolis, home of the famous "Indy 500" automobile race, is about one hour's drive from Terre Haute.

在學校上課時我也喜歡與同學互動。西方社會的上課方式和東方社會有很大的差別,在美國,老師喜歡同學上課多發言討論,提出自己的看法,即使看法不同,老師也會鼓勵並尊重不同的意見。另外,老師也喜歡同學分組討論,在上課中發表,這樣可以培養學生自己主動思考及團體合作的能力。一般在台灣,老師通常是只授課,學生回家複習並準備考試,無形之中減少了不少學習的樂趣。而在課堂上有不懂的地方,下課時也可找老師討論,加拿大的老師都非常樂意在下課時間讓同學來問問題,上課若有不懂的地方可於下課時間找老師發問。

要融入當地生活,免不了一定要用英文溝通,所以我建議多與當地同學互動,交朋友,多參加社區活動、校內社團或旅行等,都有幫助,如果是住在寄宿家庭,也可與家庭成員多練習英語對話。我那時會每天固定用完晚餐之後跟寄宿家庭的爸爸媽媽聊天一小時,時間久了英文就會慢慢進步。對於不懂的地方我也會隨時問人,加拿大人都非常友善,也非常樂於回答問題。

半年間の短期で語学留学をしました!

学校のあるテレハートは小さな町で、緑が多くとてもアットホームで暖かい雰囲気の町でした。
先生方もとてもフレンドリーで、クラス小人数授業なので和気あいあいととても良い雰囲気で、
質問すればなんでも親切に判りやすく教えてくれます。

私は滞在中は寮に住んでいました!
近くのショッピングモールまでバスがあったので便利でしたが、土日はバスがないので車があったらもっと便利だったなと思います。
大学のキャンパス内にあるので、大学の設備を全て利用できたのもよかったですし、現地の大学生の友達も出来て、会話の練習にもなりました^^
