Location

Accommodation

  • Housing
    Apartments or Shared Housing
If students plan to live off campus in an apartment or in shared housing (one or more students living in a house together), they will need to make their own arrangements directly with the landlord or agent.
It is extremely difficult to find a house to rent in the University District. Sometimes students can find a house to rent together. However, most houses require a lease, a security deposit, and the first and last months' rent. It is easier to find an apartment or a room in shared housing.

    Homestays
Living with an American family is a great way to improve English and learn about American culture. For a fee, which includes housing placement and airport pickup, a homestay agency will assist students in finding such a family.

Surrounding Area

  • The Pacific Northwest is one of the most beautiful and livable regions in the US. Surrounded by lakes, rivers, mountains and Puget Sound, it's a dream location for recreation. International & English Language Programs classes meet on the scenic University of Washington campus or in the commercial and cultural center of downtown Seattle, which is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle has a mild climate year-round with excellent hiking, skiing, professional sports, symphony, opera, film and music festivals. Both the University and the downtown campus are easily accessible by car or bus, and special UW bus passes are available for students.

Facilities

  • Basketball courts, cafeteria, computer center, fitness center, gymnasium, language technology center, library, music practice room, Racquetball/Squash courts, Recreational park, running track, snack bar, soccer field, swimming pool, tennis court, wheelchair accessible

Activity

  • Conversation Partners
Our Language Exchange Program can match you with a conversation partner, a native English speaker who is interested in learning your language. In exchange for helping you with your English, the conversation partner will get a chance to practice your language. This program can help you meet Americans and improve your English skills at the same time.

    Experimental College
The Experimental College offers noncredit classes on a wide variety of interesting topics, such as dancing, cooking and acting. You can connect with other UW students and people from the community in these inexpensive evening and weekend courses.

Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS)
FIUTS is an organization on the UW campus that offers weekly activities, trips and lunches. You will be able to meet Americans and other international students while you participate in fun social activities.

    Husky Sporting Events

Kyumin**

I attended Washington University without the help from the institution. I was worried first because of my communication skills but the site provided a lot of assistance regarding my visa which helped me through.  I studied about 4 months at ELS which is located at downtown and went to UW to study more for 2 months.

Comparing between ELS and UW, I reckon ELS is easier to get used to speak English where UW program is academic. For that reason, UW program is more structured and despite the fact there is less hours spent on the program I felt like as if I have learned more out of it. But in my opinion, if I went straight to UW program, I would have struggled. I was able to absorb more in UW program because I started ELS program first. UW has 5 different levels to choose depending on your level of English. For me, I was determined to be a ‘level 5 student’ so I could study what I want.  I chose to study advanced conversation, writing-oriented research paper writing class and did advanced listening&speaking class. The teachers were excellent and essay classes give you long detailed feedbacks so it makes me think it is worthwhile writing a proper essay. Conversation classes obviously makes you talk a lot and I learned some slangs and real life words to make things more natural.
And I had two Asian roommates one Korean, one Viet. Both of them were (유덥?) students but this Korean guy was literally American as he lived in U.S for 7 years. It was very motivating to see that student talking to white guys fluently and I learned a lot from it. And it is good to apply for meal plan as it is much easier to solve your meals. Also, within the dormitory there are places for salad bar, pizza, rice etc so it is pretty good.

Jeon**

I was procrastinating about this review so much but as soon as I returned to Korea I am finally writing this. And thanks to you guys I have successfully finished my UW programs.

UW will test your reading, listening and writing before you start the program.
Reading and listening should be fine to those who did well in high school English.
For the writing part, they give you three topics and you choose one of them to write.
There are 5 levels but in order to get into level 4 or 5 you have to choose the last topic.
I think the test is same every year, it will tell you when you sit for the exam.

After the test, they will tell you the results individually and you will be given choices to choose your classes. In UW IEP courses, your selection gets limited depending on your level. If your level is 5 for all categories (reading, listening, writing), you can choose any classes but if not, your selection will be limited.

There are ARW (Academic Reading and Writing), ACON (Advanced Conversation), ALW (Academic Listening and Writing) classes which focus on academic side of English. Or there are more flexible classes where you learn about NEWS, history or music and pay extra to learn TOEFL. Class can be either 2 or 1 hour. 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.

For me, I studied ARW, ACON and grammar 5. ARW is all about learning how to write college-standard materials. You learn about how to write, how to find ideas or how to improve your ideas. ACON firstly chooses a topic to talk about and it helped me a lot with the pronunciation and speed of talking. The teacher did his Ph.D so he could teach in various ways.  Grammar 5 was pretty disappointing; it was like learning Hackers grammar in Korea in English. It had great explanation but that’s about it.

The only bad thing about the lesson is that, your friends may choose different classes so you will have to make new friends. But that’s really a minor problem. And once every fortnight, there are extracurricular activities and it is good to participate in that. Debating and international party are also there for you to enjoy and I still keep in contact with some of the people I met there.

When I used to live in the dorm, a lot of foreign people visit your room. I was too nervous to get close but it is definitely good chance to get used to at U.S life. Sharing food is also a good way to make friends and it is not that expensive.

And you don’t have to hang out with Koreans. It is actually better not to in order to pick up your English faster. This doesn’t mean you have to hang out with white people. Just hang out with people who came to learn English like you, IEP people. You will be forced to use English so it will improve automatically. Your grammar might be wrong, or the vocab. But who cares? It is still improving. If you get lonely easy this method might be hard but not for my case.
^^

Extracurricular activities are non compulsory so it is for you to decide whether to participate or not. I guess one problem I had was getting fatter as the food was not so healthy but you can still control it as the dorm has gym itself and treadmills and so on.

ARW(Academic Reading and Writing), ACON(Advanced Conversation), ALW(Academic Listening and Writing)

ARW(Academic Reading and Writing)、ACON(Advanced Conversation)、ALW(Academic Listening and Writing)などアカデミックに集中NEWS、History、Musicと一緒に受けれるクラスもあり追加料金を支払えばTOEFLのクラスも受ける事ができます。
