  • The IEI's Intensive English Program is a 20-hour-per-week academic program designed for students who want to develop skills they will need in undergraduate and graduate programs in US universities and students who want to build English skills for their professional career. In order to help students meet their goals quickly and effectively the Intensive English Program offers a variety of courses and uses the latest ESL teaching techniques. The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign is a public research-intensive university in Illinois. Champaign-Urbana (C-U) has the friendly atmosphere of a small town, yet has the facilities of a larger city. It has a large international community and is within easy travel distance of Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis.

    In order to help our students meet their goals quickly and effectively the Intensive English Program offers a variety of courses and uses the latest ESL teaching techniques. 

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    In all levels we emphasize:Meaningful communication Learning by doing real-life tasks Integration of skills such as reading/writing, listening/speaking or reading/speaking.
    Students’ responsibility for their own learning Learning strategies for success in skill development
    Students’ interaction with each other and American culture

    Curriculum :
    Intensive English Program teach students practical tools to succeed in American college or university. Some of the skills that the Intensive English Program can help students develop are Formal Presentations, Research Papers, Notetaking strategies, Conversational English – both listening and speaking, Reading, Letter Writing, Strategies for Listening to TV, Radio, Movies, Computer skills such as PowerPoint, Pronunciation, Correct grammar usage in speaking and writing and Vocabulary development. This program has 6 levels of proficiency from basic to advanced and students attend class 20 hours a week. Class size is small with an average of 12-15 students.

Accommodation

  • UI residence halls
    All University Housing residence halls feature on-campus locations, convenient services in the hall, and professional staff. Living on campus also means that students will be able to their meal plan in any University Housing dining hall. 

    UI certified housing
    All of the Private Certified Housing facilities are certified by the University of Illinois for all students. These facilities are part of the University's housing program. They offer comfortable and attractive living accommodations in a wide range of prices and sizes. 

    Homestay
     Homestay rates include two meals a day: breakfast and dinner. Students normally have their own bedroom and study space. Bathrooms are usually shared with the family. Transportation to school and home may be by bus. Homestays for students in the IEI are arranged by a company called OvECS. Students can stay a minimum of 4 weeks or continue for as long as they like. Remember, there is no typical US family. Some families are single parents with children, older couples whose children are grown, or couples with small or no children. Some families may have pets, and you must understand and follow the family rules.

  • Champaign-Urbana (C-U) has the friendly atmosphere of a small town, yet has the facilities of a larger city. It has a large international community and is within easy travel distance of Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Shopping C-U has a wide variety of shops from huge, general department stores and large electronic stores to international food shops and clothing boutiques. Some are located on campus and the others are easily accessible by car or public transportation. From May to November, you can also enjoy the outdoor Farmer's Market where fresh fruit and vegetables and arts and crafts are sold. Public transportation systemIEI award-winning public bus system will easily take you almost anywhere you want to go! And it's free for you to ride with your student ID card. NightlifeChampaign-Urbana has lots of things to do. Students can go to one of the many movies that are offered each week in local movie theaters and can go to concerts, plays and Big 10 sporting events such as basketball games. C-U also has many bars, music clubs and dance-bars where students can go dancing, listen to live music or just relax with your friends. Restaurants and International Grocery StoresWith such a large international community, C-U offers a wide range of American and authentic international restaurants at prices ranging from cheap to expensive. Right on campus, you can find Korean, Thai, Japanese, Mexican, Chinese and Italian restaurants and many others. Want to stay home and cook? Also no problem! C-U has several grocery stores that specialize in different foods from all over the world. Other ways to have fun C-U has six public golf courses nearby. You can also go bowling, go ice skating, or play pool right on campus. C-U also has the second largest planetarium in Illinois. ParksOver 50 parks in Champaign offer many different types of recreational opportunities. Students can play tennis, soccer or basketball or go fishing, swimming or boating. There are also picnic areas, playgrounds, a sculpture garden, a nature center, walking and biking trails, and... of course, green open spaces. Community Festivals C-U hosts several festivals during the year such as the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival in April, The Taste of C-U in June, the Independence Day Celebration in July, a Music Festival and Sweet Corn Festival in August, and A Parade of Lights in December, as well as many other smaller events during the year.

伊利諾州的氣候非常多樣,跟台灣相比起來這裡更有四季的感覺,夏天常常都是萬里無雲、艷陽高照,相當炎熱;春季跟秋季則相當乾燥而涼爽,是非常舒服的天氣;冬天則相當寒冷,今年冬天的最低溫度到達零下十九度,雖然個人感覺是低於零下五度之後的體感溫度都差不多,時常會下雪,在平原地區下雪則是在台灣幾乎不會看見的現象。
UIUC是一個非常純樸且可愛的校園,南邊主要是農學院以及一大片綿延無盡的玉米田和實驗田,並且有一座鐘塔是學校的地標之一。
在這裡想跟大家分享在這邊感受到的學習風氣,跟台灣有些許不同,這邊的上課氣氛非常活絡,老師們都非常鼓勵學生問問題,而學生也很習慣上課問問題,一但遇到大家有興趣的事情,往往可以討論上十幾二十分鐘,而每次因為問問題所以學習到的東西,可能比課程本身還豐富,因為老師準備的教材只是他知識庫的一小部分,而每問一個問題,老師可以藉機或者是想到更多補充的資訊。另一方面,有些課上課起來比較像是知識交流:有時候會聽到學生因為家裡從事相關行業或者是自己有興趣,分享了很專業也很有趣的知識,甚至是老師也不知道的,但是全班都受益。這也是和台灣比較不一樣的地方~~
