About the  Governors State University

  • Governors State University (GovState) was founded in 1969, originally as an upper-division institution with a primary focus of serving community college graduates pursuing baccalaureate degrees. During the five intervening decades, GovState has grown to become the only regional, public, comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving approximately 4,600 students annually in 85 different bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs. GovState features a highly diverse faculty and staff of roughly 1,000 employees that reflect the students and community we serve. Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    Governors State University's Intensive ESL Program is designed to serve the needs of international and domestic students that have an interest in improving their English language skills to further their academic success. The curriculum is designed and taught by professional faculty to prepare students academically, socially, and culturally for success as university students.

    Curriculum :
    The Intensive ESL Program offers English as a Second Language for those interested in improving their English Language skills for academic purposes. Course offerings include: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Vocabulary, Writing and Grammar, Multimodal Composing, Pronunciation, Cross Cultural Contexts and TOEFL test preparation. We offer beginning to advanced levels, and students can begin the courses in the Fall, Spring or Summer semesters.

  • Prairie Place contains 98 units and 280 beds. Housing cost varies by room and contract type. Please note that these are current room rates, room rates get updated each May in preparation for the upcoming school year. All resident students will be assigned the $1000/semester (Silver level) meal plan, with the ability to decrease or increase their amount within the first 10 days of each semester.

  • The Campus is located 30 miles (48 km) south of Chicago. It is within 30 minutes' drive from cities Kankakee and Joliet as well as northwestern Indiana. The main campus is located on a 750-acre (3.0 km2) wooded landscape with several lakes and natural trails.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • We are in the heart of Chicago’s Southland near I-57, a major north-south route, and I-80, the region’s major east-west route. The campus is a 37-mile drive from downtown Chicago and 35 minutes from Joliet, Kankakee and Gary.

    METRA Electric Line - from Chicago's Randolph Street Station to the University Park station with stops in between. From there, it's less than a mile walk across to the main entrance.
