About the  California State University Monterey Bay

  • The American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) provides an opportunity to learn or enhance your English skills from knowledgeable and friendly English as a Second Language (ESL) experts. The friendly ALCP staff will help students adjust to life in America and advise students on how to succeed in the U.S. and at CSUMB.

ALCP has various sessions and program length. The program is for students who wish to improve their English skills for professional development or academic preparation.

Students can enroll in ALCP without taking an English proficiency test. Students who do not meet the English proficiency requirements can enroll in ALCP and then apply to our degree program through Conditional admission.

ALCP is offering an in-person program for Spring 2022.

Conditional admission

  • Conditional admission is an ideal program for students who are interested in pursuing a degree at CSUMB and meet the academic requirements for admission, but require further instruction in English Language. These students will study as part of our ALCP program until ready for matriculating to the university as a degree student.

Students will apply to the American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) and indicate interest in the Conditional Admission during the application process. Your application will be reviewed by Admissions and if you meet the academic requirements, you will receive a conditional admission letter to your desired bachelor's program. An I-20 or DS-2019 will be issued for an adequate period of time for you to achieve proficiency and to obtain a degree.

Once at CSUMB your language level will be assessed and you will be placed in the appropriate level of English courses (levels 1-4). After successfully passing the highest level of ALCP or reaching the English Proficiency requirement for your desired program, you can formally apply to CSUMB through the bachelor's degree application process. An English proficiency waiver will be sent to the Admissions office.

Please note, acceptance to the Conditional Admission program does not guarantee acceptance to a degree program at CSUMB. If you do not become proficient in the English language, you will not be accepted in the degree program.

If you have successfully met the proficiency requirements, you can begin your degree track the next available semester.
