About the  Hofstra University

  • Hofstra University is an excellent option for students interested in the intellectual, cultural and professional opportunities of New York City, but who also desire a vibrant campus experience. Founded in 1935 is situated just 25 miles (40km) away from New York City and is accessed easily using public transportation. Our 240 acres of beautiful campus is currently home to students from all over the U.S. and around the world. At Hofstra we service 1300 international students hailing from 70 countries. Hofstra University offers more than 145 undergraduate and 160 graduate programs/certificates as well as over 100 dual-degree options. Popular areas of study include business, engineering, radio, television and film production, biology, psychology, fine and performing arts, world languages, political science and teacher preparation. Nearly 90 percent of students enter a career related to their academic major within six months of graduation. Hofstra also offers one of New York's largest TV, film and radio production facilities, one of the United States' only simulated Bloomberg stock trading rooms, a library with 1.2 million volumes, a nationally accredited museum. We are also home to a school of law and New York's newest school of medicine, built in partnership with the third-largest hospital system in the country. Just under 11,000 students study at Hofstra with an average undergraduate class size of 21 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 13-to-1 as well as a graduate student-to-faculty ratio of 7:1, students are challenged to debate, question, research, discuss and think critically in an open and broad-minded environment.

Conditional admission

  • Even if you do NOT meet our minimum English requirement (IELTS or TOEFL), you still can get conditionally accepted in the program of your choice with the condition of completing our English program prior to starting your chosen program.

  • Focus of Study and Benefit :
     The Academic English program prepares international students for university study in the US and allows successful students to gain entry to the first year of a Pathway or to the first year of a university degree program.

    Curriculum :
     Academic English program allows direct entry to a Pathway or university study for qualified students. With highly trained and experienced instructors, students have access to full university student status with access to university facilities and events. The program is divided into 6 levels with 10 to 15 students in each class. The classes focus mainly on Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking to help prepar for the teaching and studying style of US universities.

  • Hofstra University offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate majors spanning several fields. Key undergraduate majors include Business disciplines (such as Accounting, Marketing, Finance, and Management), Sciences (including Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Forensic Science), and Engineering programs (such as Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering). The Humanities and Arts are also strongly represented, with programs in Drama, English, Fine Arts, and Music. 跟大家分享一下我在霍夫斯特拉的生活^^
在學校上課的時候,有點像是在台灣上課的感覺,差別只是台灣的老師大多都是用中文教學,而這邊當然就是都是英文了。而你在選學校的時候也要選華人少的學校,可以讓你在課間時避免說太多的中文,但是像我選的學校主要是日本人和韓國人,所以上課時很少有機會和中國人說中文,只能用英文和大家交談這絕對是好事。
出國回來後,我自己覺得最有成長的就是我們一般人最弱的聽跟說了,聽力在天天的轟炸之下,一定會漸入佳境,加上你如果有心的話,多看看電視的影集或是新聞,因為國外的電視都沒有字幕的,你就只能咬著牙努力聽,聽多了適應了那速度就會有所長進的。加上每天在學校老師會教新的東西,尤其式些生活上的用法,你有時候會發現在電視中就出現了,那你以前不懂的東西就變成懂了。
最重要的當然還是自己要出去去體驗看看,才能知道其中的感受了。只要你不要怕,勇敢的說,就算你的文法、發音再差,他們其實都會了解你想表達的意思,也會很樂意的跟你說話的~像一般語言學校第一天會有測驗分班,筆試的部分並不難,口試的話,只要你敢說不要有很離譜的差錯的話,通常分班時就可以分到滿高等級的班級了唷~不過其實我剛到的時候,什麼都不怕的亂說,一直都可以說的很順,但是當我學越多,知道越多常見的錯誤或是正確的文法時,我有時候反而會慢下來的想怎麼樣才是正確的說法,經過這樣的練習之後就越來越進步了!!

1年間語学留学をしました!
最初の3ヶ月はホームステイをして、残りの留学生活はキャンパス内の学生寮で過ごしました。
私が学生寮をお薦めする理由は、ホームステイよりもはるかに英語を使える環境だからです!
かといってホームステイが悪かったわけでもなく、英語を使える環境が少なかったわけではないです。
ファミリーも親切な方たちでしたし、毎日英語を使ってたくさん会話してくれたので!
ですが、3ヶ月ホームステイをした後、学生寮に移って、はるかに友達もたくさん出来ましたし、
スピーキング、リスニング力が伸びたと思います!
国によってアクセントが違ったりするので、その点ではリスニング力は相当鍛えられたと思います!

授業も私は、初級レベルから大学英語レベルまで勉強できるコースへ留学しました!
自分のレベルにあったクラスで勉強できるので、無理なく勉強できました^^
